Doctor J
I'll probably pick this up regardless but I fear it'll be just as mediocre as the last 10 years of albums.
kerley
If every new album and follow on tour is announced for every band it could soon fill up a forum I would imagine...
Chris2112
It'll probably be just as naff as the rest of them, and Myung still won't sound as good as when he used a Tung bass, and Petrucci won't sound as good as when he had an Ibanez bass. Same old, same old...
YouMa
I find dream theatre very boring,i would rather watch frank gambale in a loud 80s shirt demonstrating sweep picking.
Machines
I find with Dream Theater that at first, any new stuff seems dire. With more attention and repetition, I start to understand the context of each song (between the others) with makes it far more satisfying. I only listen to the albums as one song too, I don't pick singles to listen to.

funkypenguin
Horses for courses as always........im really looking forward to what they've produced with Mike Mangini as their drummer, so long as he's been 'Mangini' and not 'Portnoy'.... steve-soar
Good luck to Dream Theater. Their founder member f***ed them off and now they are bouncing back. Respect to anyone who likes their music.
Play, not listen Seriously, they obviously love what they do and it's highly accomplished. Not my taste although I like one or two tracks. Plenty of people love it and at least it's not Pixie Lott. Myung does talk a lot of bollocks though, when he can summon up the courage to open his mouth to speak. KevB
I'm thinking of going down to the Sunday High Voltage Festival this year so I might get to see DT again. Only saw them once before on Metropolis II tour and I have to say it all rather washed over me, not one of my fave bands.
toneknob
DT were brilliant when I saw them at the Forum in erm 1994 or 95 on the Awake tour. Next time I saw them at the Astoria and they played all of The Number Of The Beast. Fun, but terrible sound. They lost the plot a bit songwriting-wise after Awake, it's all technique and flash. Silver Linings was ok but I only got that for the King Crimson cover on the bonus disc. High Voltage is a bit disappointing this year: neither headliner is enough of a draw for me, and there's just about enough good acts across both days to fill up one day's festival-going. Good to see that the Prog Stage is being billed higher than the metal stage this year - and they've changed the layout of the stages as well. Have you ever heard the rest of them? Myung seems like the only down to earth one to me.
They lost the plot a bit songwriting-wise after Awake, it's all technique and flash.
If you'd said after Six Degrees I could agree, but IMO their best stuff comes from A Change of Seasons to Six Degrees, although I'm not a huge fan of Falling Into Infinity, I'd probably take Awake over that. To me, although Jordan Rudess is an amazing keyboardist I don't think he's a great composer, and as he's become more established in the band the material has become weaker. I think Portnoy's writing started going seriously downhill as well. And his vocals were always awful. For the number of bands potentially viewable it still doesn't seem too bad value to me, considering I paid that sort of money just to see Rush. It's just a bit weird that as it has turned out neither headliner is that big a deal for me, could sneak away early and miss the mass exodus I guess. Good point, I suppose. I saw Rush too, and got more than my money's worth (from the second row of Block A2 in front of Geddy). For a weekend ticket, and if showtime scheduling allows, I'd get Slash, Caravan, Von Hertzen Bros on Saturday; Curved Air, Tull and BCC on Sunday. I'm considering it now - I'll see what happens when show timing is announced.

Everything since then felt too much of an undertaking to get into given I'd already wasn't that keen. Still, love Awake and previous stuff though. mcgraham
I really like Dream Theatre. I think that as a band they are all really strong musicians in their own right, but more than that they all gel together well and support one another, making something more than the sum of its parts. I also feel that their songwriting is (generally) pretty good, particularly given the length of time they've been around and the amount of material written. Saying that, I think that their sound is consistent, and that can seem a bit repetitive (I really dig their sound and approach so don't mind this, but even I can have my fill). I personally find that certain aspects of their sound from various eras comes round in circles... and not necessarily in a nostalgic 'recurring motif' kind of way, more of a 'heavily recycled idea' kind of way. Also, I've found that different band members seem to go through comparative 'stale' patches relative to other band members, e.g. Myung was epic (IMO) on the Octavarium album, but I can't even pick him out of Silver Linings; LaBrie's vocals were too clean (IMO) in earlier albums but really exciting vocal melody and gymnastics that matched the other musicians - now his vocals are getting some welcome texture and edge which IMO suits the music better, but this has unfortunately been at the expense of more interesting vocal melodies... but such occurrences are not unusual for any musician and its only my personal opinion and taste that leads me to say this. ... having said that, when they work their magic (which is most of the time IMO) they have got something really special going on.
