skin_vert
Hi guys. I'm very new to the world of Bass Chat but have enjoyed browsing the threads here the past few days. I was hoping that some of you maybe able to answer a question for me: Basically, i'm after a new bass; i have a few in mind. One being a Fender Jazz. Now, my ideal Fender Jazz would come in the combination of Sunburst finish, tortoise shell plate, block inlays (white or black) with preferably a maple neck... however, a Rosewood neck would suffice (also with block inlays). I was just wondering if any of you Basschatters are aware of a specific name for this combination? ie: 70s reissue etc? Just so it would make searching for my desired bass online etc a bit easier. I'm aware of the Geddy Lee signature bass, (Sunburst, maple neck, block inlay)... all that would need changing is the plate. However, are there any other MIM or MIA versions with specific names 'out there'? Would be appreciative of any info to help in my quest! Do let me know. Cheers, R. Pete Academy
Have you tried the Fender website? If it's only a case of, say. a scratchplate, then you can add that on afterwards.
BottomE
Sounds like the kind of bass i would choose too. There is the Marcus Miller signature bass - made in Japan http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/searc...rtno=0257802300 The vintage and the Deluxe
skin_vert
Cheers for the replies guys. Appreciate it. I'll have a look at the Fender website now. I've noticed the Marcus Miller basses yeah. Though truth being told though, i think i prefer the natural version of his bass. But for a Sunburst, block inlay, maple/rosewood bass, are there any other versions. As the Vintage posted above is Natural finish, and the red Deluxe above, although i've seen them in the Sunburst combination i'd want, i think would be out of my price range though. Any other thoughts guys? Keep them coming! Cheers. R.
LawrenceH
Fender Classic 70s MIM is the cheapest Fender with block inlays that's available in sunburst I think. It's bloody good, too
Nostromo
You could consider a Squier ? This Squier Vintage Modified Sunburst might be just the thing ? I understand they are about £275 . . . They get good write ups from a VFM point of view ?
skin_vert
Cheers for that mate. It does look lovely doesn't it. Though i've been playing a Squire for over 10 years now. I'm at that stage now where the lust for a Fender has become too much. So going to try and get me one!
You could consider a Squier ? Awesome bass!
The Jap 75 reissues are generally nice - I have one of these in ash/maple and a MIM Classic 70s alder/rosewood, love them both. Secondhand I'd guess you're looking at £500-600 for a Jap bass, £380-400 for the Classic 70s. The one I'd choose would depend on whether you want 'standard' or 70s pickup spacing. For some reason the Jap has 'standard' spacing even though it's a 70s reissue, whereas the Mexican instrument has 70s spacing where the bridge pickup is set a bit further back. It has a small but noticeable effect on the tone, but also on the feel of the instrument if you like to play over the back pickup. Oh yeah, better pickups in the Classic 70s IMO. Still a massive difference in price though so neither are likely to be deciding factors.

Mr Fudge
There are some great Jap Fender basses that come along on here reasonably often, IME as good and sometimes better than US. 75RI great nodel
Mr Fudge
Not a Jazz .. but this looks a cracker for a first bass/ serious quality upgrade. Been playing a Squire Precision for 10 years now. Time for a change.
