I can't imagine a p at the bridge sound particularly great tbh. but I'm sure someone will like it
Well... I'm not so sure now.

IMO the P should have a split pup in the regular position, also chrome knobs.

The J should have a jazz pup in the bridge position.

Just my 2p.
The blacktop range is about the 'power' of humbuckers.

I'm pretty confident that the double P on the J will sound pretty similar to a PJ with a little less high end and more low mids.

The the humbucker Js will sound either like any other generic humbuckerx2 or if they are indeed 4 single coils like they should then it should sound like a fatter J bass.

All speculation of course. I want to go try one before GAS hits me.
Ive never liked a Fender P or J with different pups. I owned the USA Deluxe P bass with the humbucker and it was poor, IMO, compared to the Ray humbucker.

Id like to try but I doubt id like them.
As in the "old" Deluxe with a JJ humbucker?
I never felt it was trying to emulate the sound of the MMHB. Certainly not in that instrument. More like "beef-up/thicken up" the output/tone of the bridge pick-up when compared to the "P" pick-up. Single "J"s can sound weak in a P/J unless they're relatively high output.
If you were expecting it to sound like a 'Ray, no wonder you were disappointed.

I think they both look brilliant. I had a (passive) Vox Standard bass that had a single P-Pup at the bridge, it sounded pretty fat...

Defintely gonna try these out!

I do like the look of the Precision. For the price though (compared to the other Fender models) you can't really complain too much. I'm thinking it could become a good midpriced doom instrument when it comes down to drop tuning a four string.

I don't like the look of the jazz to be honest, I think that having humbuckers on both models would 'look' better, but the proof will (or should be) be how they sound.

I don't like the chrome finishes either, but that is just me.

Like most have stated, the pickups are on the wrong basses. Also, the colors are so .....bland.

Now what would excite me would have the P Bass withe the normal p pickup and the double Jazz pickup at the bridge, with a jazzneck and a C.A.R. body and maple fretboard. That would be quite wonderful. :) :)

But, I understand what Fender is trying to do with them and putting out something that will appeal to both old Fender fans and gather in some new ones.

The proof is, as already stated, is in the playing.

Had a go on the jazz with precision pickups today and thought it was pretty nice!

The colour was this horrid glitter white thing, and the build quality was slightly worse than the mexican standard. However it sounded beastly!! Soloing the front pickup gave a solid p-bass tone, and using them together gave something sounding between a jazz and a p-bass. Really liked the tone, even sounded nice with my dismal attempts at slapping!

Overall I would say the design is good, just not sure about the build quality. Then again it retails at about £520 so it's one of the cheapest things you can get with a fender badge on it.

On a different note I also tried one of the new jags, and that has got me really GASing!

Nope not one of the squiers. Fender have just brought out a new CIJ jaguar that's around £770.

I played one and I loved it, however I have never played one of the old jap jags so I can't compare.

I think I would like something like that with the P picks on bridge and neck.... Quite curious about the Blacktops but I don't like the looks...
