As WOT said, it's Nigel Clutterbuck.

Tasteless sh*te. I was stood next to him for 2 days at the LBGS and apart from the fact he played that rubbish solidly for 2 days without a care for anyone else in the world, he doesn't seem to realise the volume on bass amps doesn't have to be on 11.

The worst part is it's interesting to watch for about 30 seconds, so as people filtered through, he always had a crowd which seemed to encourage him. It really wasn't enjoyable for 2 days straight.

yeah if you throw a few pennies in an empty washing machine set at high will produce the same style i believe.

Ach but in saying that....I guess its sh*tty bammin up some fellas life work on bass. I am happy faffin about rock tunes and canny slap to save myself. I on occasion have tried but realise I much prefer what I do at my purely novice level.

He's actually a nice man - he was my Rotosound rep when I had a retail outlet in the 90s.

He would call in for a friendly chat even when he knew I wasn't going to order anything. Never pushy like some other reps.

Mind you, I used to call time pretty soon after he picked up a bass to exhibit his undoubted skills. Best idea was to hand him a bass with 'Jamerson' flats. :)

Oh my god, I have never heard anything so terrible. Listen to it again but with your eyes closed. It just sounds like someone bashing some metal. No melody, groove, tune, just lots of metalic clanking sound. Totally pointless and not an ounce of music to be heard. Awful.

While I agree to an extent, he does it with complete disregard for the people around him. As my above post, I've been stuck next to the guy for two days straight while he's assaulted everyone's ears.

Music's an art and all art has it's place, but I can't feel bad for speaking negatively about someone that doesn't understand that not everyone likes to listen to ball bearings falling down Escher's fire escape for hours on end.

No melody, no groove and I agree about the hideous metallic clattering noise.

Truly awful.

If I had to work next door to the stand he was working on I would be serving a stretch for assault with a deadly weapon - I would shove that bass right up his ass. Sideways.

+1 He gave me a copy of his solo CD when we did a gig together (very strange gig at a working men's club, but I digress) and it's great melodic playing and he's a nice guy to boot.

Shame he has a vile shiny Warwick. :)

On topic again: To be honest, it did get to the point at the show where I was going to go say something, but he turned off his amp and went to try out the amps on another stall (Krampera was it? I forget) and the poor guy on the stall got so many glares from everyone when Nigel plugged into the biggest cab he had, the volume quickly went down.

Nigel is actually an excellent all-round player and knows perfectly well that that's no use in a band (he was actually in Dare). He's very self-deprecating and does most of that to amuse himself the same way I tend to pickup a bass and razz around on it at shows, not to impress anyone else but because I'm having a bit of fun (which I thought is what it's all supposed to be about). He's a very easy going guy and a very nice bloke. Ask Alan Cringean who was also next to him at one of the shows. If you filmed most of the players on any bass forum noodling around amusing themselves they'd get slagged to death. I know I would. :)
I've never been particularly fond of that sort of thing.
Good at what he does perhaps, but it doesn't 'do it' for me.
I reckon he's just taking the mick out of every slappin' and poppin' bass branleur in da house by doing it 10 times better and 100m times faster...

It's funny how a bass player like him can rattle so many other people's cages. Slap is the easiest way of demonstrating quickly that you have some kind of talent to those who are unaware that what you're doing is nothing special. It's frustrating but I don't suppose he's doing anyone too much harm.
Has this guy ever played in a band situation? I've only seen him in/at trade shows playing clanky w***
See my post above. Darren Wharton's Dare and Forever Endeavour amongst others. He works for Rotosound which is why he's at the shows.
