mentalextra
Why do some replacement jazz type bodies have a large "oversize" cut out for the neck pick up? I have just been skimming through Ebay and noticed one or two like this eg "mighty mite". While some appear to have the snug, "close" fitting pick up cut out? Eg: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/No12-Alder-2-2kg-jaz...=item20b8e2c79a http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mighty-Mite-unfinish...=item415acbb6b6 As opposed to this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jazz-Bass-Replacemen...=item35b1752cc5 .....and this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAZZ-BASS-BODY-NATUR...=item45fb1bd3ea Can anyone make sense of this for a newbie please? ikay
Pure laziness on the part of the body builder IMHO! These days lot of jazz bodies seem to have the larger rout as it's easier to machine and hidden under the pickguard. Even the new US Standard Jazz has this. One benefit of an extra large rout is that it gives you the option to install a P pickup for a P/J configuration. In practical terms, unless you're planning to remove the pickguard it doesn't matter either way.
mentalextra
Well thats the thing. I rather like the "no scratch plate" look. Could you explain to me about the P bass pickup thing?

mentalextra
No, you're right. I just had a measure up. Shame, that would have explained why they routed such a large opening, so why bother to accurately route the bridge pickup and not the neck. Weird? Is there a wider after market neck pickup that some players prefer? Edited June 15, 2011 by mentalextra
Beedster
No, you're right. I just had a measure up. If it costs an extra $1 to rout to the shape of the PUP (i.e., extra cost in tools or time), and you make 10000 bodies, that's $10,000 extra profit. Ou7shined
It also helps the tolerances in the final assembly be less critical.... like having a roomy keystone. Bridge alignment anyone? Edited June 15, 2011 by Ou7shined
