How upset would this make you?

So if you weren't interested in it and wanted to sell it on and you took the neck off to validate your age claims only to inflict that damage you wouldn't be interested in it? I would be bothered from both a financial point of view and as someone who has an interest in basses in general whatever type of bass it was, Its not like picking up a dink or a nice bit of mojo finish checking.

No..I mean I wouldn't be interested is buying it if someone had looked after it like that..of not, as it appears.
It would be a shame, of course. I rate my MM circa 80-82 as one of the best basses I've had, but some people
don't have much of a clue..I knew a guy who stripped down a 62 P-bass to bare wood... and tha cost him a LOT of money.

Oh I see what you meen now. Its a shame because it looks like it would of been a realy tidy bass other than the natural checking of the top coat. I know what you meen about people not having a clue as Im into old cars too and its much the same with them, I saw a nice 30's Austin the other day but it had been finished to perfection in modern 2 pack paint with a glossy finish which is cool for hot rods but to most people a thick coat of cellulose suits the car much more. At least if its re done in celly it can age over time where the modern finish will look new forever. Shame.

You can still get celly Johston I think it has to be for industrial purposes or something :) I would put the Ecky in the hot rod camp though mate and it would of had a fairly flat top coat back then anyway so if you can make it look right and last longer im all for it but 30's cars just look wrong.

I guess it depends on how you view old designs doing a modern job.

A freind of mine has an old Vincent 1200 thingey which drop jaws everywhere he takes it... but he has restored it with stainless steel parts..which he made himself.
The thing looks the DB's even to someone like me who knows nothing about bikes..but he took it up the road on old design crossply tyres and said it was lethal..he was gutted, it rode so badly.
So modern tyres and he is happy..but certain people think the stainless steel mods plus the electric starter and new tyres is against the grain..???

But by the same token, I was offered an E-type fully restored for £25k...and I know that would have driven worse than my current car and been slower to boot.
And how authentic was it anyway..??

I guess what I am trying to say is..given the disposable money I'd have vintage if I bought into the idea totally..and so therefore do it properly.. but since I don't have the money for that sort of
weekend ride.....or a vintage bass that I would use.. it isn't something I don't have to ponder over.

Not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing... but I do think bikes and basses should be used, so that might direct my thinking

I guess I meen in a collectors examples only. My old car has modern paint and radial tyres, Electronic ignition and a sport coil etc but its never going to be a show stopper unless someone wants to spend a fortune on it which is like that bass now with the cracked finish. If it were perfect I wouldnt really want it as like JTUK says these things are for playing/driving etc but that is where the big money is.

And check out marlowes little grin during this especialy after the slap bit, You can tell he likes this one a lot. This gives me so much pre EB gas wish im extinguishing in time with Marlowe :)

Sometimes it has to be done, If I were paying £2000 for a vintage bass I would want to see the heel but maybe took off a little more carefully. The only way it would stick like that would be if the finish was still wet when it was built but the body and neck date are months apart?
