The best book I ever read (twice) on this was by [i]The principles of Orchestration[\i] by Samuel Adler. Brilliant book. Don't think it does Big Band stuff though.

Thanks Garry - I'll check this out. Orchestration always seems like something of a black art to me, so I think I need this to dis-spell a few myths!!

Yep , i have that and it is great, although it is called [b]'Study of Orchestration'[/b]
also another good read is [b]'Sounds & Scores' Henri Mancini.[/b]
[b]Orchestration - Walter Piston[/b] also worth a look.


If you don't fancy on line [b]'Principles of Orchestration by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov',[/b] Amazon do the Book & CD's set.

If you like the Guide to Midi Orchestration - you will like the 'Groove3 MIDI Orchestration Explained'
Its on a DVD and goes into detail about what works with what Instrument wise, workable harmony,
How to get articulations out of even basic GM sounds etc.

On the other hand if you are not into that side of things, and just want the theory knowledge side of it,
and not the programming of articulations etc, it might not be for you.
