paul_5
The best book I ever read (twice) on this was by [i]The principles of Orchestration[\i] by Samuel Adler. Brilliant book. Don't think it does Big Band stuff though.
Gareth Hughes
Thanks Garry - I'll check this out. Orchestration always seems like something of a black art to me, so I think I need this to dis-spell a few myths!!

If you don't fancy on line 'Principles of Orchestration by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov', Amazon do the Book & CD's set. If you like to put this stuff [Orchestrating] to use in your DAW, this is great DVD, Groove3 MIDI Orchestration Explained Midi Orchestration Explained Garry Edited June 20, 2011 by lowdown
Bilbo
I have all of the above (the Rimsky Korsakov is on my desk in work, taunting me ) but I also like these: Jazz Composition & Orchestration - William Russo Composing Jazz Orchestra - Willaim Russo (this is a 'pocket sized version of the above - a lot less detail but still useful) The Guide to MIDI Orchestration = Paul Gilreath Arranging for Large Jazz Ensembles - Ken Pullig et al What I can't offer a solution for is the difficulties in finding the time to be able to absorb all of this stuff!!
