KiOgon Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Never mind the refin - what about the fretboard? [attachment=83205:__KGrHqN...Snw___12.jpg] Not seen this before, it looks like the 'Fablon' is coming off the fretboard What's that about? Ou7shined Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I had a '70s Jap six-string tele fretboard do the exact same thing. The lacquer turns really brittle and chips off. Easy to fix but requires a de then re-fret. Looks like this re-finisher couldn't be bothered doing the whole bass (maybe the neck's worth more untouched ). Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Ha, the grub makes it look like a cheap pale rosewood board underneath. Quote
gareth Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Often happens with maple boards Nothing to worry about in my book - infact some say it adds character/mojo Quote
Big_Stu Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Do you think they charge extra if they have to ship to the mainland? Quote

Obviously not a one piece maple neck/board, but like Mr Foxen says "it look like a cheap pale rosewood board underneath" Hence my remark about Fablon! It looks like a cheap 'maple colour' covering - be it laquer/paint/varnish/sticky backed plastic - whatever! If it's going to peel off like that - it's sh*te in my book Edited June 21, 2011 by KiOgon Quote

Roland Rock Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 My maple P is a similar age to this, and has the same "problem" more or less the whole length of the fretboard. I'm not sure how it happens, but think I remember someone calling it "ring rash" (ouch!! ) ie someone's ring chipping the lacquer off. It's darker because the unfinished maple absorbs years worth of sweat and grime. I must say that mine looks a lot more natural, with deeper yellow and some grain in the maple. Maybe the pic is misleading. So, I'm with Gareth - definitely Mojo! Quote
