Pete Academy
Here's Rhonda Smith - Prince's bass player, along with many other credits to her name - performing a bass solo with Jeff Beck's band. risingson
I think Rhonda is a good player, but the solo seemed like the kind of solo 'expected' from the bass player of Jeff Beck and a little contrived. It's like the bass solo I've heard a thousand times before from a thousand different bass players, not particularly unique IMO I will always love her playing with Prince though, particularly stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vITKFi2W_o
peteb
Good stuff – and apparently she didn’t get the gig by sleeping with the drummer….!

What an amazingly tight band. Rhonda's groove is sublime.

Her playing on the Prince DVD 'Live at the Aladdin' is great. Her solo albums are pretty cool too.
Rayman
I was gutted that she wasn't on the Prince dates at the O2 a couple of years back.

Not a big fan of either of their solo stuff but both seem extremely capable bass players and both seem to work well enough in JB’s band……

Tal seems to get a lot of criticism, I can never figure out why.

I saw this tour and remember a different solo. I'd have to agree it feels cliche and oriented to a rock audience.

Which causes others to attack her for being put there for non playing reasons. Both totally unfair things to do. She is not judged by the same standards a male player would be judged by. I think she's a great player with some Pino like sensibilities.
Shonks
that was a Larry Graham slap rip - probably ignored if a guy did it ( bitter or what - hahahaha! )

Pete Academy
I didn't want to open the Tal Wilkenfeld debate again, but I think she and Rhonda are equally as good. There were a few nasty remarks last time the subject was featured, especially as to why Tal got the job. She got it because she's an amazing player. Whether you like the players or not, at this level they are all fantastic musicians at the top of their game.
