Give me some new tunes to learn!

I've not been gigging nearly as regularly recently and have found myself at a bit of a loose end bass playing wise. This is all set to change in a week or so when I'm going away to play for a week or two but in the meanwhile I've had the opportunity of being able to woodshed a bit, just me and my bass!

Anyway, I need a few tunes to learn just to keep me preoccupied! Open to suggestions here, one or two killer bass lines. Jazz, funk, rock, R&B, anything really I'm easy. I'd be happy of a few suggestions.

I leant this one a while back, it's a stunning bass line. If you get a chance Chris you check out another tune from the same album called Heed the Warning, if you listen to the end then there are some of the most ridiculous fills I've ever heard on record, playing clean over the barlines and still managing to sound musical.

How about something from Yes? Most of Chris Squire's lines are an interesting challenge. Long Distance Runaround springs to mind.

Something a bit heavier? Easy Livin' by Uriah Heep.

Save a Prayer by Duran Duran for something interesting but more mellow.

Bob Marley - Is this love

This was tabbed in one of the Bassist magazines back in the day and I had great fun learning it.

Howdy

Im listening too michel camilo "one more once" live album- get some of this down

also Dorinda clark cole live album- very gospel, check out "so many times" that will keep the fingers busy!!!

Maceo Parker live "shake everything U got" is good for keeping things solid.

stevie wonder gig "live at last" 02 araean - good version of spain, unusual key ( band are sh*te, with the exception of the drummer and stevie) but a god tune to have a bass workout too/ changes etc. (you can even practice improvising a better bass solo than (big watts) who's solo is absoloutly dreadful.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark, I tried my best to get 'Not Yet' down... I know a good workman never blames his tools but I definitely could have used a 6 string for it! Me stuck with my measly 4!!

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I might try and post up some results to show how far I got with a few of them.

Just been looking at September by earth wind and fire and that's quite a fun line to play when you lock into the groove, can also suggest shoot the runner by kasabian and rules don't stop by we are scientist. Both of those are quite simple to pick up but they are quite enjoyable to play I find.

I learned Timmy C's stuff back to front and inside out when I was a bit younger. Great fun to play! I was really looking for something on the challenging side, a bit more like Lowdown's Chick Corea suggestion except something that doesn't require 6 strings to play.

Much to my detriment I've never been a huge Zappa fan, although it has been a while since I tried last so maybe it's time to return.
