Roland Rock
As if the bugger wasn't heavy enough, I've decided to paint my stripped 78 Precision. I love Sonic Blue, but ideally I'd like a colour that is faithful to the year of the bass (Sonic Blue was discontinued in '72) Does anyone know of any resources where I can see the full range of colours available in 1978? Telebass
Fairly limited range by then, basically Sunburst, White, Black, Blond, Natural, Walnut. Antigua had also reared its head by 78.
gary mac
This site might have some useful info for you http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender2.html
skankdelvar
Here's a legitimate way round the limited colours vs authenticity issue. In 1980-81, Fender offered a range of colours called the International series. A typical Fender ploy, this was a sneaky way to use up surplus 1978-9 bodies and necks (retaining their production year serial numbers). The colours included Arctic White, Morocco Red, Maui Blue, Monaco Yellow, Capri Orange, Sahara Taupe, and Cathay Ebony. Who's to say your P might not have been one of these? The capri orange is lovely, but here's a P in Maui Blue: Edited June 24, 2011 by skankdelvar
lozbass
I'm not sure this really helps, but I have a Fender US J in Sonic Blue in my office now - it's from 2003 (Special Edition '75 reissue with MHS) - you can see pics in Gear Porn 'Jazz' thread. I agree, Sonic is just a fantastic colour. If Sonic's what you want, I'd just go for it.
Roland Rock
Thanks for the info. The situation was looking grim, until Skank came along with his 2am authenticity-loophole-finding ways. Sweet. Decisions decisions... Still loving the Sonic Blue, but the Taupe is very 'of the time', and every now and then, I get the urge to go for Capri Orange, with which I think a black scratchplate might be cool. Thanks, and I'll post the finished article upon completion. Edit: Just ran it past Mrs RR and she likes the Capri Orange/White Scratchplate best. Update Edit: Def going for the Orange - perhaps there's something subliminal in my avatar that steered me that way Edited June 24, 2011 by Roland Rock

risingson
I don't know what year Graffiti Yellow came about, I have a feeling it was the early 80's but that was one of my favourite finishes, seldom seen nowadays too. Sonic blue is a great colour though, I think if you intend to keep the bass forever and aren't worried about the resale value then go with whatever you fancy! wateroftyne
Or... hang on a couple more years and go for something in Stratoburst...

As you say, it's a keeper, and it's already stripped to the bare wood, so if need be, i can always break out the Nitromors

Sonic blue is one of my favourite Fender finishes, any man that owns a bass with such a finish I'll certainly envy
Roland Rock
Job done! It's not perfect, but for my first paint job, I'm more than chuffed, almost giddy (bear in mind that this has been my one and only bass for the last ten years). If anyone is playing/attending the Rock n Bike Festival, Leics, look out for my Capri Orange beauty on the main stage, just before A Foreigners' Journey and the pole dancers! lozbass
Absolutely wonderfu job and one of my favourite colours. I can't tell from the images (I can see one or two silver screws) but I'd go for all black screws in the plate - I'm pretty sure that the Capri Orange basses in the International Series came with black screws. 4 Strings
I was just going to post 'Orange, orange orange!' and there it is in its glory! I think it looks absolutely great! I have one with a bitsa body and might do the same thing. (Only work so well with the maple neck)

The screws (apart from the pup cover ones) are the originals, so are steel in various stages of tarnishment. I reckon I'll try to get hold of some black ones to complete the look.
