Cables for Aux in

Hi

The Streamliner 900 has a 1/4 in, and the iPod I have is 1/8th in, as usual.

Ive been looking round for the best solution as all my cables I currently have dont fit!

So, am I best with:

OR, these two together (does the gold plating make ANY difference at all?!):

+1 on non-oxidisation, which is good ... in theory.

But.

If you plug something in and then leave it there, it won't be able to oxidise anyway since it will be in contact where it needs to be.

If you're constantly plugging it in then taking it out again, well, have you seen how thin the gold actually is on something that's gold-plated?

The gold won't "chip off" because it's far too thin (we're talking 0.5 microns here, that's 1/2000th of a millimetre). It will rub off fairly quickly.

And you won't notice that it's gone because it wasn't really making a difference in the first place.

+1. On the Streamliner you are lucky in that the aux in is in stereo. On my Shuttle the aux input is mono, so I had to build a stereo-mono cable in order to got both channels from the ipod coming into the amp.

Gold contacts are best in static installations, where the plug is going to remain in place - due to the aforementioned oxidisation advantage.

Your first choice is the best one as constant plugging and unplugging will actually clean the surface (without the risk of wearing that gold plating is prone to).

Anyone that tells you gold plating is for a better contact or better sound knows nothing. It is the lack of corrosion that is significant.
