strain relief. so the cable doesn't kink and damage the insides if it's pulled sideways.

although those don't look too amazing, and to be honest a good heatshrink usually works just as well.

I think it's to prevent the cable kinking at 90 degrees,which would put pressure on it knackering the cable ( but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct my ramblings with the "actual" reason!)
