Im looking to do their bass degree course when i finish college any info or personal experience would be nice just so i can get an idea of what its like but ive got a long way to go........... King of Loss Posted June 9, 2007 Share Posted June 9, 2007 I have a friend who studies at the guitar institute there. I am going over to stay with him in London next week. Hopefully I'll get a day to go in and check the place out, I'll let you know what I thought of the facilities and stuff there, and I'll talk to my friend about how he has found the past few months. Hutton Posted June 9, 2007 Share Posted June 9, 2007 My son is currently doing a B.Mus degree at the Institute. He was advised to do a years diploma course first of all and then to move on to the degree. The course has been absolutely superb with his playing and musical knowledge increasing to a high level. As I write he is recording with his band The Parish Music Box (see their MySpace site). The cost of the course and the cost of living in London should be taken into consideration as my son couldn't have done this without support from home. If I can be of any more assistance let me know. Sibob Posted June 9, 2007 Share Posted June 9, 2007 I've got friends who have done VocalTech, Bass Tech, Guitartech & the drummer in my band came away with 'Best Drummer' for the degree course at Drumtech. Strangely i haven't really spoken at length with my basstech friend about it, but both my Drummer and my vocaltech friend have both said that they wouldn't necessarily recommend it to everyone. My drummer said that they don't really teach you how to play as such, just afford a more focused environment and a fair few contacts! So a lot of the work is down to self-motivation. Both my drummer and vocaltech friend have said that going for an open day is essential and both recommended the Diploma over the degree course!. Rodders[/quote] I'm not sure about the 3 A levels. My son had Scottish Qualifications so I don't know the eqivalent. There obviously needs to be some academic qualification. Best to check with the Institute. Also, my son had to audition for entry to the diploma. As he passed his diploma he then got entry to the degree course. He has never sat grade exams. If players have come out of there being a bit orthodox, I wouldn't necessarily put that down to the teachers/course. But Dave is a fantastic musician, so if he does teach there that would be a good thing for you! I can't speak for London, but I'm currently doing a degree at the ACM in Guildford and there's plenty of diversity and scope to take your career where you want it there - I'd imagine most similar places are the same. [/quote] Yeah you can - I did the Jazz degree in Leeds, majored in performance, and then because i had the degree i was accepted into Law school. You don't get gigs with the degree though...
