Andreas Zeller 3/4 DB, gig-ready with lots of candy

Recommended Posts

Hi, all due to two new DB arrivals I am putting up for sale my old faithful Andreas Zeller 3/4 DB (carved front and laminate back/sides). Its about 15 years old or thereabouts and was bought new from well-known retailer Chas E. Footes in Soho for about £1,000 IIRC.

I have recently spent over £200 on it having a new bridge installed by top luthier Malcolm Healey, plus it has a new Tom & Will gig bag (£150), Hercules stand (£40) and Shadow SH950 pickup (£100). So thats around £500 of extras and work done on it in the last couple of months! FYI, Malcolm has set the bridge for medium, rather than low, action but it could easily be filed down to a much lower action if you wanted it (though this is a taste thing; the lower the action, the faster the playing but the lower the thump factor). Now wearing low tension Silver Slaps gut-alike strings.

Being a few years old and gigged it has some crazing in the varnish on the back and a few dings here and there - there is nothing major/serious (no splits or cracks) that requires any work or expenditure. It is basically gig-ready!

Given my recent spends on it and the value of the extras (new pickup, stand, gigbag), I would like £850

Due to the size it would be pickup (or local meet-up) only. I am nr Hammersmith in London

For photos, click on the 'porn pics' link in my sig below. You will see it has some feedback-reducing foam plugs in the f-holes (which you can easily remove) and some retro stickers on it - the latter are vinyl and just peel off. It also has (ahem) some tippex position marks on the side of the fingerboard which you can keep or just scratch off with your finger nail.

Aah.. my first DB was one of these of about the same age. With the bridge upgrade this should be a really decent piece of kit, and adding in all those extras seems like a BARGAIN ALERT in my opinion :)

Thanks mate - always difficult to price things like this that come up infrequently - other Zellers on BC have gone for £750-799 but this has a bunch of extras and the upgraded bridge. Given what its cost me, I think £850 is a bargain. Plus if you tried to recreate this setup with all new gear it would cost about £1,700 (Zeller £1,190, bridge and gigbag upgrades, >£350, stand £40, Shadow £100), so its effectively priced at just half that of a new equivalent.

Thanks Jake!

As an aside, when Malcolm Healey replaced the bridge he also adjusted the nut and checked the fingerboard. So - barring the issue of personal taste regarding action/bridge height as mentioned above (the bridge could be filed for lower action) - it really is in completely road-ready condition
