BottomEndian
I think he means, "Kim Deal - who the f*** are you to tell me my business?!".
I know, it's just some early-morning sarcasm. I don't get on with that sort of attitude. Besides which, I don't recall her telling anyone what to do. In the video that Conan posted, she merely seemed to be pointing out (in a fairly self-deprecating manner, I feel I should point out) that "real" bass players tend to add things that she doesn't. Fat Rich
I can't be bothered to read this thread but I'm going to comment anyway Last night our singer told me that the bass player in his old band wasn't a patch on me. He said he was good but couldn't do that "slap thing". I only do it on Car Wash and maybe the odd bit thrown in here and there. So no mention of my trying to capture the feel of Bob Babbit on Signed, Sealed, Delivered or the fact that I play I Can't Help Myself with one finger in a desperate but totally unsuccessful attempt to sound a bit like JJ. Or that on the last chorus of Rolling in the Deep I play a really nice high harmony part with the vocals. Or even that during the middle eight to Forget You everybody else takes a back seat and I carry the whole band through it. None of that even registers. But he notices the slap. Make of that what you will but as far as I can see slap is a totally valid technique, no different to pick or fingers and it's also one that non-bass players, or "norms" tend to enjoy. The no-slap argument to me, is as pointless as the no pick argument.
Is it possible that the whole slap debate is actually of no interest to anyone except (a few of) us bass players? And that we're all just wasting our time?

urb
I think you should play however you want - if you enjoy it then that's the main thing - working and playing with musicians is the next - a love of music should probably go before both of those - success is all relative and I think being technically adept is all part and parcel of learning your 'trade' - admittedly there are a ton of bedroom players now, probably more than ever, is that wrong? I know guys who play stadiums who can slap, tap, sweep pick and improv jazz till the cows come home - but they can grab a pick and play 8th notes too... it all MUSIC at the end of the day. oldslapper
Just looked through this thread, including my own Chilean red induced nonsense, and I've come to the stunning, and sober, conclusion that:- What other bass players choose to play is no one else's business but their own. Don't get why there's so much venom aimed at other players.....get on with your own playing instead of aiming the spud guns at others, they don't care what you think. Back to the wine.......mmmmmm

But, I popped two notes at practice the other night, during a song, and all of a sudden there was talk of doing Level 42 tracks. They all got thoroughly excited. I soon told them to forget it. I don't bother embellishing songs like Rolling In The Deep. No one notices so can't be arsed. I'd rather have a good old gander around

Pete Academy
Slap bass evolved from jazz upright players, who wanted to be heard. Larry Graham allegedly invented the style for electric bass, having no drummer in his act. As a style, it's unique. We should celebrate this. There are thousands of players that are technique only, but when played with feel and musicality it's unsurpassed. wateroftyne

Y'see, that's a great part. It fits the song perfectly. That's taste. The thread knocking about the other day that went wrong, of someone slapping over testcard music / porn soundtrack, wasn't tasteful, IMO. It was too busy and left no holes. Incidentally, despite what some people think, I don't hate slap. One of the albums that made me listen to bass in my formative years featured Marcus Miller. Marvin
It is a good part that fits the song. However, I'd disagree with Pete that it makes the track. I listened to it through the speakers on my computer and bass line is barely audible, yet it didn't diminish my appreciation of a very well written and performed song. Probably the only people who will consciously listen to the bass part are bass players. Most other listeners are drawn to other parts. Upping the importance of the bass line among bass players may be a symptom of being pretty much ignored in the main.
