I listened to it through the speakers on my computer and bass line is barely audible, yet it didn't diminish my appreciation of a very well written and performed song.

Probably the only people who will consciously listen to the bass part are bass players. Most other listeners are drawn to other parts.
Funny you should say that.
I am a massive Marcus fan, Huge Luther fan. But the thing that always sticks out on that track to me, is the great Funky Guitar lines.
Great track all round.
I know guys who play stadiums who can slap, tap, sweep pick and improv jazz till the cows come home - but they can grab a pick and play 8th notes too... it all MUSIC at the end of the day.
This is what always makes me laugh when the 13 year old pipe up with comments like "l0l Vitor W00ten is zo fastttt...but itz all techniques...whr is THU GR00VE?"

Because we all know Wooten could knock out 8ths on the root note all day long to a better standard than his detractors. He's actually so good he's went past such plodding. Sure, he can do it, but he can do so much more too.

My main bass influence is and always will be Mark King. But I can't do what he does for two reasons.
1) I can't physically do it to that level. I'll chuck the odd pop in when needed, but to whack out polyrhythmic lines like Mr. King does so effortlessly and cleanly is just beyond my capabilities.
2) I don't want to. There are a number of people on youtube (you know who you are) who have copied every single hammer-on, pop, gliss, slap, whatever that gives Mark his very distinctive style. These bedroom/dining room/living room warriors have taken his style and added absolutely nothing of their own to it, even going so far as to use the same guitars, amps, effects, strings as Mark.
I'm not jealous of slap players, I'm jealous of players that have the motivation and patience to improve their playing to the point where they have their own voice on the bass guitar and as a result beating off gigs with a sh***y stick. I have to say I'm really enjoying Foo Fighters Nate Mendel's playing at the moment. Very tasteful, but still not playing "obvious" bass lines.

I dont agree with Kim Deal that bass players have to be restricted to just playing root notes. But I agree that they go well with many songs. It fits with her style of music.

I like to encorperate some different techniques into my playing, but I try not to over do it. It anoys me when people just slap the crap out of a bass with no real notes.

And so what? I've got a Status Series II, I occasionally play with .30 guage strings, I have a Mark King signature amp and I love playing Level 42 stuff. But thats not everything I play and I doubt it's everything the youtube guys who do Level 42 playalongs do either. But if you can, why not? After all, I've found the kit that Mark uses to be extremely good. I can assure you it's not just used for Level 42 stuff!

No indeed! It's equally good for Mezzoforte and Shakatak material! :)

BTW, when did you get the Status Chris?

He's fantastic, much better than that Victor Berlin, or that other bloke you lot keep going on about...Stanley King??
I don't understand why he's by himself in a dark room though? Where's the rest of the band, and why have they taken the crowds applause out of the mix?

There's more to playing the bass than technique... there must be or I would never get a gig.

This is what I tell fifteen year old kids who have way better technique than me - "I'm a better bass player than you because I have a car!!!" :)
Quite right.

That's the end of that then.

Have you been fishing and did you catch awt?

EDIT: how do you spell awt? Is awt? Or ought?
I think the word you may be looking for is "aught." I don't know how much it is used in the UK, but it is no longer used very much in the U.S.

"Multi-dimensional bass techniques"?

I'm assuming that includes Dimension X, where Shredder and Krang both agree that this gash is actually listenable, owing to the strange nature of this alien world?

If not, allow me to deploy some subjectivity, and state that it's f***ing awful.

"Owt" is a word in British English? I have never heard of it. Of course I am sure there is much I haven't heard. I was in Ireland for four months and sometimes encountered words from the Irish I'd also never heard. "Aught" is a word in American English, but I almost never hear it and think it must be considered archaic by now or close to it.
Oh aye. "Have ya had owt to eat, hinny?" That sort of thing. Just means "anything".
That's interesting. I'm always fascinated by this sort of thing. I'm not sure how easy it would be for me to understand British English on a daily basis. I did well with the Irish, but that's quite different.

It is rather colloquial mostly employed by those who live North of the M25, rather than those of us down in the cultured end of the country :)
Oh, hang on, everyone in Devon seems to use it as well....

Indeed. The antonym is 'nowt'. Imagine , if you will, two unsuccessful anglers:

A: Caught owt?

B: Nowt.

Her indoors is Dublin born and bred; she maintains that the Irish render English in its purest form. That said, you would have no difficulty conversing with the average Brit. Stick around here long enough and you'll soon be fluent enough to pass for a local.

Indeed, said both many a time.
