Heres the great man himselfs livejournal: http://stwish.livejournal.com/

I was considering buying a bass off him, he seems to reply to mail within a coupla hours. Scored one locally though.

In his blog he comes across as an intelligent thoughtful individual and, basically, an all round nice person. He can't play the bass - I'm sure there are worse crimes.

What is interesting is this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua9nQwFD2uc...feature=related

Proof that in the right hands,aWishbasscan sound very nice indeed.

I still wouldn't ever contenmplate buying one. The most unorthodox instrument I'm every going to own in Burpster's Fender HM Bass.

That's up there with the 'shreds' series on Youtube!

I saw that as well - he's a good writer, and hugely prolific!

I think it was Dave Pomeroy who described the basses as 'folk art', which is an interesting angle to take on them. The only one I've played was pretty much unusable as any kind of regular bass guitar, but was a fascinating lump of oddly shaped wood, and make some pretty unique noises... I guess if they vid is any indicator of what Mr Wish actually wants to hear, then the basses make a whole lot more sense than they did before.

It's still one of the funniest things I've seen in years... there's something hugely uplifting about hearing music that genuinely seems to have come from a whole other planet, like there's a system to it that I'm not getting at all... :)

It has to be said, I didn't realise, when I posted the link, that it was the instrument's maker playing. That gives it a totally different context.

I've since read his blog ... he is obviously an interesting and unique individual. If I ever come across one of his trussrod-less basses I'll be interested to give it a spin.

Your link to S Lawson led me to watch this youtube clip ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v8zq6HRRhQ ) and I love the whole song/arrangement/vocal/playing/mistakes but I'm particularly impressed by their honesty and humour. Thanks for that :)

Any idea what looper he is using?

I'm pretty sure Steve uses a looper called looperlative ... If you check his myspace blog (link in my post above) I'm sure he's talked about there. Alternative if you go to his own website (http://www.stevelawson.net/gear.shtml), there's a brief overview of his gear.

Well (refering to the original post) it might lack something in the execution, but as an idea it seemed good to me. Far more interesting and musical than a lot of high speed slapping (for example).

I liked the slide technique, but the lack of any LH technique or basic intonation ruined it a little... Interesting take on bass playing, but murder on the ears, LOL

Perhaps the video title of "Wishbass" has some relevance? :)
