I love my Peavey Grind, also very fast neck, looks almost like a boutique bass, and has a 35" scale but you wouldn't guess it! But most would say the passive electronics are somewhat inferior. I like them personally :)

String spacing plays a huge role in the 'perfect' 6 string bass.

I didn't get on with the Overwater that I had, the 19mm spacing was too wide. My Zon has 16.5mm as does my Jaydee Calibas, they're amazing to play.

Hi Peter,

I think your topic title will attract the answer "There is no 'best' out there, because it's down to personal preference"

then you will be inundated with different answers for your second question too. You might find that it won't be that helpful any more than a long list of great 6 string basses. You won't know till you start playing as many as possible to find out what suits you.

I could give you a long list of basses I have owned and tell you all about them, but it might be better to list all the places you can go to play some real tasty kit instead!

Bass Gear, Bass Direct, Bass Merchant, The Gallery etc...

But in answer to your question, Shuker every time. I've two customs built to my specifications and they are spot on the best basses I have ever played - but as I say, they are built to my requirements and thus might not be liked by others.

I've never played a 6 stringer (other than guitars :) ), but if I was going for the best then a Ritter would be on my "to try" list.
From the few i've played, i quite liked my friend Ibanez SR506, a little neck dive but really light and easy to play, all in all a really awesome bass.

I very much liked it, and nearly bought one (or the 5 string equivalent), the big sticking point in the end was the colour, brown and brown only, are you serious?

I actually quite like the colour of it, i have no idea why, but if they sold them over here i would probably go for an SR706, as its essentially the same bass but with a flamed maple top and has 2 colour choices i think.

I like the look of those too! I'd definately get the black though, obviously :) If it had a 35" scale I'd have gone for one of those instead of the Peavey

I have/have seen too many basses that look nice only in natural/the right light, these are those, on a stage they'll look mud brown at best, and yes Liam, a definite thumbs up for teh 705.
Great basses though, great tone, playability, etc, only the colour I dislike!

I've got a couple of nice six strings...An Ibanez BTB,which is probably not what you want as it
has a 35" scale and a wide,but comfortable,neck. I've also got a really nice Tobias six,which is
lovely.

But,'the best'? Whichever you like the sound and playability of-it doesn't matter if it's a Tanglewood or
a Fodera.

If I had the money, I would definately go for http://www.ibanez.com/BassGuitars/model-SR5006E

Especially if you already have an Ibanez. Best looking 6 string I personally think too, none of this horrible body shape nonsense.

I know I've commented on the other exact thread, but if this was more sensibly priced I'd be all
over it.......

I totally agree with this. Hence my love for cheap and cheerful Peavey's. I've played pretty much every production model bass out there, and I always find myself coming back th them :)

Seen that before! Loving the choice in preamp, and the bridge looks nice. But a 14mm spacing? That's crazy talk!

What's the going rate for one of those, Doddy?
