alant
I've been using a MIM Fender Jazz bass for a few years now through my MarkBass amp etc. I reguarly get comments after gigs regards the "nice sound" from my bass so I am happy with the combination apart from the weight of my bass. However, being the wrong side of 50 (I still think I'm 21 though!) I have struggled recently with a bad shoulder after playing and wonder what the options are for a lighter bass. I really want to stick with a Fender Jazz and wonder if the USA examples are generally lighter - different woods etc. Some feedback from you Fender experts would be great. Thanks. Jacqueslemac
What about the Aerodyne? I've not weighed the two of mine to compare, but the Aerodyne has less wood.

Less wood and it's lighter basswood at that. Wouldn't call it very light though.
alant
I did wonder about an aerodyne myself, probably have to get along to a shop with a decent selection of basses and try a few out.
Lozz196
I`ve had 2 Jazzes, a Mex Classic 70s, and a Jap Aerodyne. The Aerodyne was a lot lighter. 2 currently up for grabs: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=aerodyne http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=aerodyne
Doctor J
You can take a chance on solid bodied basses which are supposedly lighter or if you want a guaranteed lighter bass but you like the feel of the one you have, buy a chambered body and fit your existing parts to it, maybe add a set of Hipshot ultralight tuners too. alant
Thanks guys for the replies so far. I was wondering if any of the Fender USA Jazz bass options are lighter generally than the Mex ones. Presumably different types of wood make a difference to the weight.

Have you thought about a G&L JB-2, they are more like 8 - 8.5 lbs.
alant
Thanks Redsriper I will probably check out the G&L option. Having said that we had a rare rehearsal session last night and didn't suffer any shoulder problems. Next gig is a week on Saturday followed by a few weekends in sucession so will see how I get on then!
BasH
Maruszczyk makes a lighter Jazz bass.which can be built to look like a regular one (just mention it, 'cause on their site the look more 'bare'). On their site they only show actives ones, but I'm sure they'll built a passive one as well if you ask them (with any type of pickups, hardware etc.) It is a chambered bass, but sounds exactly the same as their regular Jazz model (with the same strings, pickups and preamp of course).
