Jean-Luc Pickguard
I came to the conclusion that I didn't like thumbrests & prefer a fender chrome pickup cover to rest my hand on (like a cack-handed version of James Jamerson or Marcus Miller). On basses that don't have a cover, I just float my thumb, although I've temporarily blu-taked a jazz cover to my mustang to see whether its worth fitting one properly - not sure yet, but my initial impression is that it seems to be an improvement. Wil
One of the things I like about stringing BEAD is that I can usually use the B as a thumbrest. When I play anything on the B I'll either float or anchor on one of the pickups - which one depends on the tone I want.

Perhaps I should have read further than the thread title.
Make sure she's okay with it first though? Might stop you getting the desired end result. Wil
I wish my dad had explained this when I was younger, it would have saved me a black eye and a broken thumb.
bh2
I'm a floater unless I fancy digging in, then I'll use a pickup.

gsgbass
The bottom corner of the the neck at the E string. Lightly resting on the E. It also stops unwanted vibration of the E.

Or indeed trim some double sided trim tape to size (probably the safest, reversible way). Another question; is it worth getting the extra pickup? Even just to noodle around with for different sounds? I'm buying new, so an extra £135 isn't that much more...
Dont use glue! Especially it will ruin the finish around were you have glued
