chardbass
Just seen this fairly recent solo. He's been a bit of a Marmite player for me over the years but this plain blew my socks off. Looks like his move to LA will pay off- great interaction between kit and bass and a truly frightening array of chops. The best I've seen in this style for a long time. Jaco on acid. However...... There will be people on this forum who will want you removed from Basschat for posting that link, accuse you of having a tash, bad clothes, Demand you hand all your Basses over to the Police, and your family taken into care. You have to ask yourself is it worth the risk? or do you feel lucky? Garry Edited July 23, 2011 by lowdown
Truckstop
Amazing! Smiles all around, great chops and a nice groove! Truckstop
Pete Academy
Technically amazing, no doubt, but I prefer a groove-based solo with less notes.
bubinga5
is it a show case for his chops... is it musical bass playing.. i think its both... but it does get to a point where hes just showing off and it sounds a little silly.. no doubt hes amazing on the bass.. but overall its fret w***ing... though im betting when hes not doing all that he can lay down the groove like no other.. i bet his skills pay the bills for him edit.. i was listening to it without the vid and it just sounded bad.. hes awsome no doubt but he just sounds like some idiot on his own personal journey through some free jazz mind trip..... sorry.. risingson
Really impressive playing. He still doesn't sound like a bass player that demands my attention but there's no denying that the guy is a major talent. It was serious fret w***ing though! retrohelix
I thought that was incredible. I'm off to do some practise.
Truckstop
Oh come on! He was clearly just having some fun riffing with the drummer! Don't we all get a bit silly sometimes and just muck about? I don't think Hadrien would want that to be listened to as a finished product anyway, more it should be watched as a celebration of what improvised music is about! Fun and chops! lemmywinks
Why are there no drummers like that where i live?

Truckstop
thats part of his thing.. i wouldnt say hes just "having fun with the drummer".. he very often plays in this style.. yeah sure he could do anything on the bass.. but imo he does like to explore the fret board alot.. and it sometimes comes across as a bit self indulgent.. but man if you got it... ha, i wish i could muck around and get a bit silly like that though.. OliverBlackman
its kind of like someone did an experiment. They gave someone who has never heard music in his life a bass guitar and Hadrien is the outcome. Although i have only heard him solo'ing, would love to hear him playing in a blues trio or something just to see if he can do it.
MoonBassAlpha
I doubt an eyebrow would be raised if this solo were being played on a sax (ok, except the chord bits!, but you know what I mean...) Jazz sax and trumpet players do this sort of thing all the time, and you don't hear accusations of w*nking being thrown about there, so why because it's on a bass? Jerry_B
I have to be honest and say that this is my idea of bass hell
Chris2112
What a fantastic solo! Great drummer too. Love this sort of thing.
Doddy
I've got mixed feelings about Hadrien. He's got crazy chops, but often he uses them all the time and it becomes a barrage of notes-like at Bass Day the other year. This vid has got some really good moments where he's doing some nice phrasing. You know the drummer plays with Prince, right?

Just not my thing, it bores me... but I am VERY pleased it was not a slap-fest... and the guy is good. Very good. I wish I could one day had as much talent in my whole body as his index finger does. Kiwi
Love the drumming, how Chris Coleman manages to keep steady time with so much space, so many polyrhythms AND tying into what Hadrien is playing is utterly breath taking.

ROConnell
Incredible. That is a rhythm section and a half.
ossie
Check out John McLaughlin's 'Industrial Zen' - 'For Jaco'- Feraud can do it all right, and if its good enough for John !!! I like all this stuff but it aint commercial.
thisnameistaken
I didn't listen to it all but I liked a lot of what I heard. I don't usually go for bass solos much but that had plenty of interesting moments. And no slapping, which is a big plus.
RichF
my god I am so trying hard to like this. I am an average rocky, poppy sort of player and I have no issue with chops and all the rest - I admire and lust after that kind of wisdom and ability - but this is one of the least interesting examples of the "high end" market I have come across, just way too much going on. I will listen again because it must be me. Edited July 23, 2011 by RichF
Faithless
Really nice stuff and I appreciate Hadrien's chops - I think they've done the same thing (15/8) in Cafe Cordiale, NAMM - you can find it one tube. And, though I may not be competent enough to discuss this thing, but let me ask you something - what's the point of doing the 15/8 thing if you're laying down plain 4/4 ideas over that? It's something that great Irish bassplayer Ronan Guilfoyle talks about, check this out: http://www.ronanguilfoyle.com/press-group-8.html PS Hey, this one's is also really cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRZO1gaJiy0...feature=related Laimis Edited July 24, 2011 by Faithless

It's a bar of 4 and a bar of 7/8 which isn't the trickiest time sig for guys of this calibre to feel. I guess that's where Chris Coleman is having the most fun tho. Interesting responses and no outright flaming from anyone- for sure he isn't to everyones's taste. On watching it again it's his fluidity on some of those runs that blows me away.
