okusman Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Gents I'm playing in Helsinki, Finland next Friday. The rest of the band are really happy with the gear provided, but I've been provided with an ABM 500 1x15 Combo and an RBX 170. I'm gonna take a set of strings to liven her up, but does anyone have any experience of whether she'll be good enough to play a gig with...It's mainly Pop/Soul/Rock...but there are half-a-dozen "thumbed" lines...is this a disaster waiting to happen!? I really don't wanna take a bass with me! Any input.... Mark Quote

LawrenceH Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Pickups aren't the greatest but it'll play well enough and with a new set of strings will sound absolutely fine. My old one has been gigged a fair bit, always done the job. Quote

As far as basses go, Yamaha don't seem to do rubbish! Quote
Doddy Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 It'll be fine.....it's a Yamaha, they make good stuff at all price points. If you're not happy, take your own bass on as hand luggage (assuming you're flying). Quote
HADGE Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 hi mate iv got a rbx 270 bass and its a great little bass iv got fenders warwicks ibenez ect and got to say i think yamaha basses are some of the best around dont worry just go play your bass and enjoy it . good luck hope it goes well. Quote
Marvin Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 There was a very old and very used Yamaha bass in the practice room last week. I haven't a clue which model it was due to it's age. It had on split coil pickup, a set of strings that were probably made just after man had discovered how to make steel and was a little abused. Obviously I had to have a go . I was genuinely surprised at how good it sounded and how loud it was. With a decent set and new strings it would have been perfectly playable. Quote
neepheid Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 It'll do the job admirably and I reckon it will surprise you. My bass tutor uses an RBX (dunno which one - it's not posh though) live through an Ashdown Electric Blue combo, and seems perfectly happy with it. Quote
dannybuoy Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) I've got an RBX270 that I've gigged with plenty of times, it's actually a bloody good bass! Don't worry 'bout a 'ting. Edited July 25, 2011 by dannybuoy Quote
MatthewKeys Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Don't know about that model, but like people have said.. yamaha make really good stuff! I love my Yamaha rbx775 Quote
Ian Savage Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 The Yammy'll be fine, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised. If you want the security of having your own bass with you, have you considered detaching the neck and bubble-wrapping the whole thing in a bag to take as carry-on luggage? Quote
Truckstop Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I'd be more worried about the amplification! Wooly much? Truckstop Quote
