What Are You Learning ?

Recommended Posts

Any Clapton stuff is good, I am doing White Room, Bell Bottom Blues and Promises.

I am also working from Ed Friedlands Walking Bass Lines and Bass Improvisation Books, and Stuart Claytons Bass Styles, plenty there to keep you practising.

Thin Lizzy - Chinatown

The main riff is fairly easy and a good bit of fun, and the intro run down is very challenging speed wise, I'm still working on it.

Steve Miller Band - Jungle Love

An almost funk rock song, i haven't actually started learning this yet, but i very much intend to.

Recently learned Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, took a couple of days to get all the little embellishments on the main riff learned but it's really satisfying to play!

I also learned Jamerson's bassline to Reach Out (I'll Be There) by The Four Tops, it's always been one of my favourites so it was a crime not knowing it until recently.

Jungle Love is a great track and it's a cracking bass line...I might have a go at that.

lately I have been mostly fighting my way through "Stormy Monday"... both 'versions'... (Albert King does a completely different bassline for the song)

having gotten "Thrill is Gone", "Crossroads", and "Born Under a Bad Sign" well and truly grooved into my system

I'm working on getting more standards under my belt so I can hold my end up in jam sessions

back in my Punk days, things were a blind panic to try and keep up with the changes which could be totally at random...

My weekly thing though is all fresh and I have about 5 new songs to get done every week for the Sunday service...
it doesn't help that most of them I've only got sheet to go by and no tracks available to play alongside of...
Things can be real fun when our congregation doesn't know the tune either...

off topic but a really good exercise for intonation is to pick an interval and slide between the two notes in the interval on one string, change interval, repeat, use all intervals till comfortable then employ the same tactic with larger intervals that involve string crosses, change interval, repeat. When sliding try keeping contact with the string and apply a little pressure to the string between notes.
If you are wondering WTF is he on about? Its this:
familiarising yourself with exact positions on the fingerboard aids your subconcious to have more accurate reference points and sliding between notes (assuming you know what in tune is) helps you accurately position good notes
I learned this from an orchestral player on DB when I was having difficulty with a few specific notes, sorted it in no time.

Lots of Mars Volta, particularly off the last two albums - Tetragrammaton, Viscera Eyes, Aberinkula, Wax Simulacra and Goliath especially. Juan Alderete can really play, very tasteful as well.
