I think for most it's quite the opposite. In the case of most rock gigs they've got the 'casual' role in the band, they don't need to know much or be able to play very well, so they don't really need to practice, and they probably won't be heard anyway, etc. I come across very few bass players who take any real pride in doing a good job of it. Most seem happy to make up the numbers.
I've always been more involved with metal rather than rock, but never really found (or at least spoken to) any bass players like that myself.

Garry
Canvey carnival, which is back this year - website here with the route, road closures etc in case you find yourself hemmed in and wondered what was going on.

I agree with the OP to some degree but wouldn't you prefer quality over quantity??

Yes, some people do come here with the intention of just selling stuff (the good stuff will sell, the rest won't) but some do stick around and make some genuine/excellent contributions. One of my friends, who has been a member here longer than I have, rarely comments..

Somebody made, what I think is, a valid point about there being a lot of specialist knowledge here and there are some who have a monopoly on that knowledge (I'm thinking Doddy/Bilbo) which is no bad thing but I'm sure that some newbies can find this intimidating/overwhelming..

As for those selling and never being seen again, I did notice that the would-be seller of my old Wal (PB1683) has been conspicuous by his absence since it was pointed out that the pictures he was using were actually from the ebay ad when I bought it in October 2010. He also failed to address the comments about the work that was required on the bass..in effect he marked his own card and I would be surprised if he was able to sell the Wal here..especially as it should now be back in Portugal!!

As a member on a couple of other bass playing sites (Warwick/ Wal Naturally) there does seem to be some duplication of subject matter between sites and I would be reluctant to bring over a subject from there (even though I think the "How did you get your username" thread on the Warwick site was quite entertaining).

Some threads have repeatedly been done to death - I'm getting pretty sick of "have a go at the slappist" threads - nobody seems to have a go at the pick players who use loads of effects!!..and as I said in one of these threads recently, progress in technique has pretty much been led by Slap players in the past few years..

My final point...there are a number of strongly opinionated users here who have been outright aggressive in some threads in the past - remember this can be so intimidating - and not only to new users..stuff like this will only serve to drive people away!(see my sig below)
This forum is mostly older players discussing older players and old music. But I don't know if that's because young players simply have more interesting things to do than work on their bass anorak credentials, or whether they came here, found it was mostly threads about funk or prog bands from the '70s, rolled their eyes and closed their browser.
I'm young and I can think of quite a few other players on here of a similar age, although I would agree it's mostly an older contingency. The reason I like this site is for being able to discuss music from a bass player's point of view, although the gear chat doesn't totally interest me so I don't get too involved.

As one of the older players myself...

I'd have loved this site had it been around when I was in my teens. I wanted to know everything about both playing and discovering new music. I had to make do with clogging up floor space in my local musical instrument shop, buying International Musician, Sounds International and NME and listening to John Peel and Alan Freeman.

A true musician and fan will be interested in both the music and the means by which it is produced.

I would have to say I find that post a little offensive, I'm not saying you intended it to be that way. I think maybe you're looking in the wrong threads, I'd say 90% of the threads I've replied to in the last few months have been to people under 25 asking about buying new gear or their first gear. There's lost of sections on this site I care little for, like the off the topic, which I guess you'll find more of the older folks, which most kids wouldnt be interested in.

I think I found this site after googleing for help with my bass, ever since, I haven't left this site. I wouldn't say all the 'kids' roll there eyes at the sight, I do believe there are alot who check these threads out but don't have much to say, do they don't, and I think a good amount of those maybe youngsters, we get lots of visitors who just browse.

Just my 5p

To me, that would be just as useful as good feedback in some cases, but i guess there is a protocol to take into account.
I've seen bad feedback once, because I checked someone's feedback before doing a deal, I asked them about it and was satisfied with their explanation.

No I didn't intend to offend anyone and can't imagine how it could offend anyone but hey ho, it's impossible to say anything without offending someone isn't it.

I'm not saying I was right anyway, but it's one possible explanation that popped into my head. I'm never sure in these threads whether we're supposed to suggest reasons why the number of contributors isn't growing exponentially or simply agree that we think it's unfathomable and declare how much we love everybody and everything.

Yes and it has lead to at least one banning in my time on here
