Fender mix 'n' match... what are the rules..?

I'm thinking of building a 4 string P bass from fender parts.... can you mix 'n' match from say the MIM 'MIJ or made in the u.s. ....? Any tips would be appreciated

Mostly 'yes' with necks and bodies, controls and PUPs (and most bridges), often 'no' with pickguards and tuners.

only experience I have is putting a jap neck in a mex body and the body needed a little tweak for the neck to fit properly.

From a purely mechanical point of view it's doable if you don't mind fiddling about adapting parts to fit properly.

However, from a cost point of view you will probably find that the sum of the spare parts needed will by far exceed the cost of buying a pre-made one...

Beware that the early MIM J basses used two same sized pickups as opposed to the long and short Js. The later batch of MIMs have aligned with the standard long and short pickup lengths.
