Immo
You may remember her from this thread. That's my baby. I love this bass, this will be my first and foremost instrument*. Unique looks. Unique sound. Comfortable playing. Just near-perfect experience. It plays really nice, typical P-bass punchy sound, but mixed with a bit of warm, funky and chewy vibe and a bit of 'purr', a bit like PJ configuration. Two weeks ago I installed a pickup from 80's Ibanez Blazer for a moment and the bass suddenly became an aggressive monster distorting my amp. The Blazer pickup is so great, yet the thing I liked about this P-bass was gone, so the SD came back on board and this bass will have this active pickup installed forever - I prefer its sound, much to my surprise. They're woody, vintage toned and the sound does not resemble the active PU's by even a bit. I've modded the bass, added chrome covers, painted the scratchplate black (again) and set up the instrument, replacing the rubbers under the PU with the foam filling, corrected the neck angle and restrung it. Just unsure, WHAT it REALLY is. It's genuine Fender, that's for sure. She's made in Japan, she has quite un-typical finish looking like a flame top, though probably it's not a FotoFlame Bass, cause the neck's not 'flamed'. Previous owner equipped her with active Seymour-Duncan APB-2 'Lightnin' Rods'. Serial number is Q-started, which places her birthday in Japan, in the early 90's, (Q is for 1993/94, but the number's quite low, so I guess it's 93'). Is it a factory custom? Is it a personal 'pawn shop' creation of some kind? Here's some specs: Color: Cherry Flameburst Neck: single piece 57' RI Neck Material: Maple Number of Frets: 20 Fret Size: Medium Jumbo Position Inlays: Black Dot Position Inlays Neck Plate: Standard 4 Bolt Body: 62' RI Body Material: UNKNOWN, possibly basswood Pickup Configuration: Single Split-Coil Active Pickup Middle Pickup: Seymour Duncan® Basslines APB-2 Lightnin' Rod® Precision Bass® Pickup Controls: Master Volume, Master Tone Hardware: Chrome Bridge: standard MiJ Control Knobs: Knurled Chrome Tuning Machines: standard MiJ String Nut: Synthetic Bone Strings: Fender® Black Nylon TapeWound (.058-.110 Gauges) Unique Features and additions: Active APB-2 electronics, Fender chrome pickup cover, chrome bridge cover, Fender thumbrest The body is similar to FotoFlame bass, but I'm not sure whether it's a real FF, as the pattern is not similar to any other FF I saw. And the neck is regular, single piece maple 57' RI. If anyone knows anything about this bass, what series it is and even how it should be called properly, please inform me, I'd like to solve this enigma. *at least as long as I'd get something from the top of my wishlist; I'm always GAS-ing Edited August 4, 2011 by Immo
