John East Musicman Preamp different size to the one I've taken out

Just bought a 3 knob, 3eq John East preamp to fit into a Musicman Sub4. Strangely though the holes for the screws don't match up. I'm not bothered in the slightest, just drill some new ones. Just wondered whether Musicman bass plates had differed in sizes over the years or whether the SUBs were different from Stingrays ??
