mrdreadful
Righto, I've got myself an RV4 (blue!)... it's a really nice bass, but the bridge saddles are set ludicrously high especially on the E string. The thing is even with the high saddles the action is about what, in my limited experience, I would consider "normal" (i.e. not too low, not too high). To further compound the issue I've tuned down to C-standard (doom!) which means I'm getting a lot of fret buzz, but I'm reluctant to set the saddles any higher in case something falls off! Anyone with experience of the RV4 (or MM-style bridges for that matter) able to offer any advice on how to deal with this? I'm not above simply getting a new bridge if needs be. geoffbyrne
Get pro setup & if needed shim the neck. G.
mrdreadful
Yeah, a pro setup is a good plan, thanks. Can't shim the neck though, it's set in.
Low End Bee
Mine benefitted massively from a pro set up. I had the too high saddle thing too that was solved in part by shimming the nut which was cut much too low. You might need a bit of nut work amyway as I'm guessing thicker guage strings would help with drop tuning?
mrdreadful
Yeah, even with my limited knowledge I can tell the nut is a bit pants and have already ordered a new one. I take it adding a nut shim is as simple as gluing a bit of material between the nut and the neck... what would be the best material for that? And yes, thicker strings are on the shopping list... it sounds okay with the stock string (fretbuzz aside) but the strings feel very loose. Low End Bee
My nut shim is made from ebony as that was what the tech had in his odds and sods box. Any hard wood would probably be OK. Try playing pop songs tuned to E. It's much easier on the ears
