allighatt0r
After seeing a couple of threads (namely this one) about guys buying and upgrading cheap P basses, I've come to the conclusion that i wouldn't mind getting a slice of the action myself. I just wanted to know, what are the best (and cheapest) P bass copies, I've heard of SX and Westfield and Aria etc. etc. but what would be the best plan of action for buying one at around £50? and perhaps spending another £50 on upgrading etc. Or am i just being far too tight... Also, are there any that are best avoided, i.e. something that wouldn't even benefit from upgrading, and that will just always be a cheap pile of crap... And, would i get ridiculed for wanting to try some home relic-ing? I'm sure i'll have more questions later on.

Flintlock
Cash Converters! They often have Squiers and Yamahas going nice and cheap. I'm tempted to buy one and rip all of the frets out
paul, the
I think getting a good neck is most important. Then body wood. I assumed SXs were reliable here considering their popularity. 'though the necks do look very orange.

Frusty
I was just about to put up the exact same topic! I too would like to try this, so if anyone could post up their experiences with non-Fender p basses I would be very grateful. I'd basically like to buy one that is made of good quality wood (I'm thinking 70's/80's Japanese copies might be best), for under £100 preferably, and I'll fit new pickups/hardware to it. Ideally I'd like something like this: The reason I think old Japanese stuff is maybe the way to go is that I have a 70's Columbus Jazz bass and it is a solid piece of wood. No need to relic it to get the vintage look either, as it is 30 years old so is already relic-ed!!

spinynorman
I bought a Westfield for a party I thought might turn out a bit rough. It was ok, just felt a bit new and unseasoned somehow. Put it back on eBay afterwards and got my money back.
