Dave Vader
You should stick some cow bell in there. If it still sounds similar then utilise some more cow bell. If that doesn't work then you need a new cow bell.
This
MacDaddy
The chord sequences? Have you heard the chord sequences to most songs?:
a lot of blues songs sound similar. I think they may use a similar chord sequence. Blademan_98
Didn't The Rolling Stones get awarded 100% of the royalties for Bittersweet Symphony?
Perhaps that explains why the Stone's management company got me to remove a song I recorded and put on MySpace. They said is was to much like Jumpin' Jack Flash or something I was just pleased because, to be honest, it was rubbish (as are all the tracks I have ever written )
flyfisher
Before McCartney recorded Yesterday, he spent weeks playing it to people and asking them what song it was ... he was sure he'd accidentally copied someone else, but he hadn't.
Yep. I'm reading his biography at the moment and this is discussed in some detail. There was also a lot of wrangling about whether or not to release it as a single but they felt they couldn't issue it as a 'Beatles' song as it was just Macca (plus George martin's string arrangement of course), so they just tacked it onto the end of the Help! album. flyfisher
If it can happen to someone like George Harrison it can happen to any of us!
I suspect it's much more likely that an established multi-millionnaire songwriter would get sued for plagiarism than any of us (no offence to all the multi-millionnaires on BC). I remember thinking at the time that poor old George was stitched up. At least he could afford it.
jonny-lad
AFAIK, you can copyright a melody but not a chord sequence...I suppose in the case of riffs that are based around chords, they would be considered to be melodies, whereas a chord sequence would be a lot more simplistic and lacking any specific rhythm.
