Band Rehearsal Space

My band lost our original hired rehearsal space due to compulsory purchase of the building so we needed somewhere but didn't want another hire space so we looked for a permanent home.

This space was known to me as an ex student used to rent it for a rehearsal space but had vacated it. It very generous in size but wasnt treated or cleaned at all :)

Cleaned and with gear initially moved in.

We decided upon initial decoration to cheer the place up, but thi would be hampered by the leaking roof at either side of the pitched roof area but the landlord would in time repair this.

I decided to treat the walls to absorb and help create isolation, although its an industrial complex there are a few houses near by and we dont want our presence known or to upset the neighbours.

Its just simple 38x25mm battens with Rockwool RW3 30mm slabs between and fabric stretched over. Very effective in reducing the reflections the room is very dead.

Leaky bit repaired on one side of the room just waiting for the other side to be done, this opened up the possibility of allowing all gear to be set up permanently of 3 bands as I decided to rent out 2 nights to help cover the rent.

The roof is the nxt job, im planning on simple 1" polystyrene sheets purely for easy of installation as they wont need painting, are cheap and cover a large area, they will add a slight reflection and reduce sound leakage through the roof

Here's last nights rehearsal

The last problem is keeping the bloody keyboard player off the desk :)

There are 2.5 keyboard players, its a Floyd tribute, :D, one main, one samples and pads and the .5 does guitar keys and some vox too. We could get away with 2 but you know............................ :)
Nice big room that! I'm a bit jealous. Rockwool (or RockRULE as I've just started to call it!), is amazing stuff. Completely changed the sound of our room.
Thanks, to be honest its been done on a shoe string, the insulation cost about £120, fabric so far about £70, paint was free as the lead guitarist is a decorator and gets end of colours free cause the company has to pay to dispose of it as its classed as commercial hazardous waste????? And the excessive amounts of carpets and underlay were free from the carpet shop out the back of my street, they are remnants and old (good nick) carpets removed from houses, given a quick shampoo.

:)
Not at all Jack, rooms bigger but you have gone for isolation and a proper job it looks too, Ive just done damage limitation :P

Cheers

Dave

 • 10 months later...

The latest shuffle around of gear and acoustic treatment of some more walls. We now have the 2 offices to the side and all the stored gear and settees and fridge etc are now out the rehearsal space.

I love your use of fabrics ... had you considered chintz?

;)

There is some fabric left over and I was thinking of making the band matching waistcoats for that classy stage appearance ;)

That's really cool, how do you come by something like that? We might be losing our regular rehearsal space in the next few months and wondering if long-term renting a place and making it 'our own' might be cheaper than using a 'normal' rehearsal studio...

I would recommend it, split the cost with a couple of bands and it's very manageable we pay about 65 each between 4 bands for this plus electricity. Have a wander around the older industrial complexes around your area and speak to other tennents and see what's available an what the landlord is like?
Try and avoid estate agents or property managers as they cost more than dealing with the landlord.

Thanks for that - how do you mean '65 each', as in £65 per person per month? That'd be eminently do-able, as we're probably paying forty quid a month each to just rehearse a couple of times a week...

Oh, and how secure does the place' feel'? The other doubt i've got is how happy I'd be leaving my kit in an unattended industrial unit...

Sorry for bombarding you with questions, just curious!
