I remember sneaking into the Edinburgh Odeon with some mates to watch their sound check in which they played 'Peaches' by The Stranglers. Johngh Posted August 20, 2011 Share Posted August 20, 2011 I always get lost for words when trying to talk about Phil. He was a great inspiration to me when I was starting out on bass. Also when I used to go and see Lizzy live, when I saw Phil, it was just like seeing an old mate again. I also saw him with Grand Slam a few times. I was gutted when he died. R.I.P. Phil had already left us by the time my mate got me into Thin Lizzy in 1989 and it was mainly Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden songs I'd play along to when I was learning to play bass. He went too early, and it's a great pity he didn't live to finish his third solo album after Grand Slam were dissolved. Maybe Phil and Gary are blasting this out together with Cozy, to celebrate! spongebob Posted August 20, 2011 Share Posted August 20, 2011 I'm a recent convert - posted on BC a few weeks back for some recommendations. Since then, picked up a good compilation, followed by 'Johnny The Fox' and 'Vagabonds Of The Western World'. I will definitely be continuing my Thin Lizzy journey. Really impressed by the diversity - not at all total rock as expected, as you always hear the same old tracks. They were on TOTP 1976 this week performing 'Jailbreak'. MASSIVE influence on me and the band - if it were left to us, we would do Lizzy all night! Always feel sad on the birthday and the day he slipped away. dmccombe7 Posted August 22, 2011 Share Posted August 22, 2011 One of my first "big" concerts at Glasgow Apollo back in 76. What an impression this band left on me. Did some roadie work at a local venue a few yrs later where Phil was playing with his new band. He was an absolute gem of a guy. You couldn't have met a nicer guy. He played pool with us, bought more than his share of the beer and even forked out at the local chippie. He was just one of the guys although he didn't half stand out in a crowd. In it one of Phil's closest friends who ran the fan club say's that just before he died he gave her the content's of his personal box, it could have been these tapes of unreleased songs, or just coincidence.
