Just for a larf, list your favourite five bass players who impessed you when they cut their mustard in the 1970s. i.e. they were around, gigging & recording in that decade.

Why the 70s? Well it's a decade that some of us BC boys 'n girls have either a memory or connection with, AND it was a decade of change. McCartney to Vicious, Mingus to Sting, Jaco to Lynott etc.

No rules ...any genre, any level of success or obscurity (and especially the non-obvious). The only thing is, PLEASE keep it to only five names, and in rank order [#1 being your favourite). It will help (me) for you to state which band(s) they were with.

If this thread gets popular enough, I will compile the results and 'publish' the results ...for no other reason than it will be interesting to see WHO (amongst you conoscenti of the deep) deserve a mention in despatches in the anals of an 'interesting chapter' of modern music history.

1. Bernard Edwards - Chic (Think most of us will agree on that)
2. Bootsy Collins - Bootsy Collins Rubber Band
3. Jaco Pastorius - Weather Report and of course his own solo stuff.
4. Louis Johnson - The Brothers Johnson
5. Larry Graham or Stanley Clarke - Sly & The Family Stone/Graham Central Station, and Clarke was with Return to Forever.

To be honest for most if not all of the guys listed above, the 70's was their pinnacle.

+1 All brilliant and quite unique..

And as Bassassin said, Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper Group) and Jean Jacques Burnel (Stranglers) are also two favourites of mine.. I'd also add the guy who played with Elvis Costello and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd! Also, musn't forget Leigh Gorman, who is an amazing bass player; Leigh started off with Adam & The Ants in 1979 and then went on through the 80's with BowWowWow.. Seriously underrated musician!

On a more frivolous note, Suzi Quatro?? :)

For me it would be:
Andy Fraser
John Deacon
Peter Hook
Neil Murray (early Whitesnake)
Dennis Dunaway

Spanning the full decade there I think.

JJ Burnell
John Entwistle
Andy Fraser
Phil Lynot
Burke Shelley (Budgie)

It's not fair - I want to get Lemmy in there as well!

2. Paul Jackson
3. Jaco Pastorius
4. Louis Johnson
5. Bernard Edwards
