dannybuoy Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 I saw a band last week play where the percussionist was sitting on this big wooden block that he was smacking to get all kinds of kick / snare sounds out of. I've also just seen one on TV from one of the V Festival acoustic performances. I'm interested to know what these are and who makes them, anyone have any idea? Quote
ThomBassmonkey Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Yep, pronounced cahon. It's basically a box with a snare rattle inside it. Fun instruments. Quote
dannybuoy Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 It was indeed a Meinl cajon I saw, cheers! Quote
gary mac Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 my daughter used one at a recent open mic night and it sounded quite fine. Seen them for sale at Gig Gear in Harlow Quote

Not expensive either. Basically, the evolved from tea chests. See them a lot on flamenco groups. Edited August 26, 2011 by silddx Quote
Bilbo Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Our percussionist uses one. We have a demo 'in the can' that I am hoping to post some time soon. Quote

rOB Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Just to revive this thread, has anyone ever seen or played with one of these great instruments in a rock setting? I'm just thinking as an interesting alternative to a full drum kit? Quote
EssentialTension Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 I jammed with some guys and drummer (or cajonist) had one. Saw one with a flamenco band a couple of weeks ago too. I've told our drummer to get one but I don't think he was listening. Quote
gafbass02 Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I've done some gigs that ended up fairly rocky with the Drummist on one of these. Amazing things, no substitute for a kit, but mic'd can sound brutal. Quote

Admittedly, you still have feet, so could open and close a hat (or rig something else to a hi hat stand) but that's about all. They can sound good mic'd up though. Quote

rOB Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Cajon & Cymbals. Not great sound quality and very full on playing but interesting none the less. Quote
