Stag
Hi all Anyone got one of the new J specials? Im really thinking about getting a J and moving my P on as the neck on a J is far more suited to me (given im used to Ricks)... and these new Specials look damn fine for the money. Whats the difference between these and an Amercian Standard? I am a sucker for the old skool TV logo as well...
Stag
Should also add that im very tempted by a Geddy as well...
Stag
Does no-one know anything about these?
danhkr
Very similar to the highway 1 series but with a gloss finish and standard bridge. I think the HW1's are an acquired taste with the satin finish and usa standards have got really expensive, I guess the specials are fender's reaction to these two factors. Wouldn't surprise me if the HW1s are discontinued soon.

Grand Wazoo
All I can say is that on Sat 10th last, when I chose to buy my brand new Fender American Standard Jazz, I lined up a Jazz Special, a Geddy in black, a Marcus in natural ash and the AmStandard and played each one in rotation to see what was what among them, and what impressed me the most in sound and playability. The one I liked the least was the Marcus, I just can't get on with that horrible pickguard extension and the dated preamp trickery in it, it might work well for Marcus and I am no way as remotely good as he is, and I am a great fan, but his bass didn't float my boat. Second from last was the Geddy badass bridge reverse tuners, is that it? (nothing to write home about either of those) and the two last contenders were the J Special and the J american standard. I did like the special but somehow the features on the Amercian Standard are better, such as the hi-mass bridge and the carbon reinforced neck, plus the lightweight tuners. In the end between the two I also am convinced the american standard has "THE" traditional jazz bass sound nailed whereas that greasebucket tone control on the special somehow made it sound too muddy to my liking and not funky enough. Hence my final decision was to take the Am Standard in the end.
Bankai
A very simple way to look at the American Specials is that they are just a Mexican but made in the US. I wouldn't consider them a substitute for a standard. Edited September 13, 2011 by Bankai
Stag
Handy stuff to know... shame they are muddy then! I might have to think again... perhaps look next year on the vintage market then... shop around...
