Audio Interface

I am really novice when it comes to home recording being more of a jammer really

however, in my new project we're planning to send us tracks forward and backward recording instruments individually,
be it just to prepare for quicker development in the rehearsal room

Since my sound card (laptop) is too bad to allow for audio playthrough I guess I need an audio interface

what do you recommend?

I've not used this one (the one I've got is a Native Instruments Guitar Rig Session which is now discontinued) but this appears to the M-Audio's equivalent to mine and will do the job.

Don't let the mic input put you off... you don't *have* to sing...

Musicman, the one I mentioned will record bass. I use my guitar rig session mainly for bass. I don't think it matters which instrument you put through them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "demo tracks on the fly", but I believe this unit will only record 2 tracks at once. That would mean that if you had all 4 inputs plugged in to instruments/mics you would be recording a stereo mixdown of those tracks and you wouldn't be able to change it after. You get more flexibility from recording one instrument/vocal at a time.

For £80, your best bet might be M-Audio's Fast Track. This is a 2 input, 2 output USB interface that has a direct monitoring function (helpful if you have problems with latency) and 24bit/48kHz recording. The "24 bit" is far more desirable than 16 bit because it gives more headroom and makes it more convenient to record. It also comes with Pro-Tools M-powered Essential, but you don't have to use this, as it's compatible with other programs. Simply using Audacity (an open source audio editor) might be more useful for you if you're recording single tracks.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as the OP here. My budget is rock bottom though & to be honest I'm not after anything fancy, just want some thing to record roughly with & then send off via email. I'm currently using my phone to record from the amp!

What are peoples opinions on this little thing found on Ebay therefore?

Got myself a zoom h1 to record jam ideas with, and recently a couple of DB lines to send to a mate, which worked pretty well. If you spent the extra bit and get the zoom h2 you can use it to record straight into the computer according to the site, kinda wishing i had now.
