Alain Caron's playing on this is so bad ass.....i cant think of a tighter rythm section than this... awsome Billy Cobham track too..

at 55 seconds, has got to be some of the most tasteful slap bass playing ive heard.. just amazing!!! imo

It's an Eddie Harris tune.

I had Alain's album 'La Band' (with this track on) on tape years ago and it blew me away. His technique
is really clean, and so good. He's a killer player.

The version most people heard first..... the great Miles Davis. I suspect the version that Caron used as a source. Nothing in common with the Caron version other than the melody. Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock. Less immediate, less superficially entertainig (less of a wow factor) but, for my money, deeper.
But no criticism of Caron; he's a great player.

This is the live version - and I agree about Alain, he's a monster but his extreme technique does get a little wearing after a while - but he's insanely musical as well - the only other minus points he gets here is for 'extreme pony-tailing' - seriously great player though :)

I love this guy's playing. I saw him with Mike Stern's quartet a few years back; his was some of the finest fretless playing I have ever seen or heard. Tasteful, accurate, and with a fabulous sense of melody. One of his solos was so melodic in fact that the tune of it actually got stuck in my head for a couple of days. How often does that happen with a bass solo?
Ah well, I'm sure somebody will be along in a bit to tell us what a pile of toss slap is. :)

I rather like these with Alain Caron. The first is the band Uzeb. I'd never heard of Uzeb until recently :) The second is at a bass workshop........

I love Uzeb but I never found Caron's solo stuff very interesting. It wasn't a lack of technical wizardry, more a lack of interesting melodies and atmosphere.

This Uzeb song is fantastic although the bass solo goes on a little bit. Just listen to the bass playing before the solo, it is quite incredible fretless work.
