there doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference in the string widths considering there's 15 strings, unless of course it's tuned in semitones

I don't think it is that bass - I think there's some little factory in Indonesia turning out knockoffs of the some of the one-offs (to be polite about them) that turn up on the web. Remember this?
