steve-bbb
i have fiddled and fiddled but alas and a quick scan through the forums here and elsewhere i concur rubbish sound and aweful tracking bet the wee lassie who sold it to me from evil bay was chuckling all the way .... oh well - any other brands come recommended to get just a few decent fat chunky bass synth tones? ta muchly
theotherphiljones
agreed. not a fan of the syb-5. you can get some good fun sounds but nothing i've managed to get into a track. used it live for some self-indulgence but nothing else. for cheap i'd defo recommend the digitech bass synth wah. pick one up for about 40 quid and it still gets a look in on my board
Pete Academy
I think it's crap. Doesn't really sound like a keyboard bass synth and you can't store sounds in it, so what's the point in a live situation, where you might need more than one setting? That's why the Akai SB-1 was so good...authentic and able to store presets. I've yet to try a Markbass one, though.
steve-bbb
cheers for the suggestions - had another search on youtube - there are a couple of demos where they get a reasonable tracking going on but reading on basstalk there is suggestion that the only way to get the filters top track reasonably accurately is to compress the bejeesus out of it first to get a steady constant input - maybe the youtube reviewers are being a bit economical with the facts? GarethFlatlands
There was one in a recording studio and I got it onto a track working behind another bass to provide some oddness, but I didn't like most of the settings and I was on my knees tweaking the controls between notes to make it interesting. I can't see I'd ever buy one.
crez5150
I've had most bass synth pedals and the only one I think comes anywhere near to what I'm after is the Akai Unit (SB-1 Deep Impact) The Korg (G5?) was ok though but a bit thin sounding. ahpook
i've had an syb3 and a 5 and didn't get on with them for the exact same reason as steve-bbb i have a digitech bass synth wah now - it's a bit more predictable. paul_5
EHX bass micro-synth. I replaced my SYB5 with one of these. It still won't store presets, but is a bit more musical and tracks better. Granted, it's not really a synth pedal at all (just good filters and an octaver), but still better than the SYB-5.
gareth1982
I've got it's predecessor, an syb3, bought it a few years ago now, and the novelty wore off after 10 minutes....hand on heart I haven't touched it since.
dudewheresmybass
I still use mine, but with an exP pedal. Set to modes 10&11, I get some really great swell/ sweeps

The whole setup was just too big for my board though.
Doddy
I'm not a huge fan of the Boss pedal. The Roland V-Bass has some great synth patches though. If I want synth type sounds I'll either mix up a bunch of effects ( OC2 is a very good starting point) or just use an actual synth (which is my preference lately)
LeftyBiskit
I've had both the SYB-3 and SYB-5, And they where both ..ite, I have the Digitech BSW on my board now.. Much more user friendly.

Do you have a choice of which parameters to control or is it fixed?
dudewheresmybass
the parameters are fixed. It's all in the manual
johnDeereJack
I bought one of these off e-bay a while back and yes, it was complete 'stool' in every respect. The tracking was just woeful if you played anything but one sustained note. I ended up PX-ing it along with a Boss AW-3 (which was also rubbish) against an MXR M82. Along with Mr. Academy I'm interested in trying one of those MarkBass Synths too.
