That 'huge' sound I'm talking about is just too addictive! I think for my next Kubicki I will look for one of the exotic top customs! :)[/quote]

I would love to try one out Chris, I like the look but I had never heard one in action. I'll need to change that.

Check out the 'For Sale' forum as I think there are one or two on there at the moment. I've just sold one, and I've owned two 1989 models in the past. They sound amazing.

Check out the soundclips on this page:

That's pretty much the untweaked, out of the box sound. A 32" scale bass has no right sounding that big and powerful!

The electrics are some of the best ever created for bass guitar.

There's currently a Cort headless on the bay. No idea if that fits your bill?

Thanks for the heads up but my fretless days are over due to RA. TBH, I wasn't all that before the RA. :)

For a great P bass sound, an 80's graphite necked Steinberger might do the trick. The XL's are great and have a neck pickup tone to die for.

Didn't realise it was fretless... you can tell I'm a graphic designer, my proof reading skills are terrible :)

Yes, Phil hit the nail on the head with those ones. Hence them being the only electronics offered on the basses. And you'll never see a Kubicki with modified electronics!

Plusses - tuning stability, ease of string change (change and tune up in 30 seconds with a bit of practice), great balance at least for the full bodied ones.
Minusses - limited choice of double ball end strings, pronouced resonance/deadspots on the cheaper ones due to lack of headstock mass ,go for a graphice neck if poss.

I'm currently in the process of fitting sperzel locking tuners to my status, that way I get almost the best of both worlds.

I also had a Hohner Jack and regret letting it go. The bridge pickup was great for digging in - nice growly sound but I also liked the neck pickup, which had a bit of a throaty character to it. Not as burly as a P, but nice-sounding all the same.

Like Moonbase mentioned, I initally used to get lost on the neck, hitting the 9th fret instead of the 7th. This happened spectacularly when I gigged it and got lost for a bar or two! :)

Had a Hohner years ago in a Blues Brother type band. Always regret getting rid as it never needed tuned and sounded decent. Was thinking about a Spirit but this thread has helped!

hi!

I'm a total fan of headless basses. Since 'doing my back in' my Shuker headless has been an absolute godsend - it still retains a big fat tone yet the lack of headstock means my shoulder and back get zero grief from it!

The advantages well outweigh any disadvantage and I don't give a monkeys what close minded people think about headless instruments! It's their loss :)

Anyway, Here's a selection of Jon's headless basses including my own flip paint finish bass (looking purple in this picture), CrazyKiwi's next to it and Johngh's (now sold) blonde beauty below.
