Geek99 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 a five string with narrow spacing ? I tried the Squier deluxe 5 at PMT manchester and the strings are too far apart for me. Normally I play a CIJ 62 reissue jazz but can just about cope with a Vintage stingray copy as a four. New or used, dont care. Thanks Quote
chris_b Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 It shouldn’t take long to get used to wider string spacing; you’ll have to move your thumb position as you play across the strings on a 5er anyway. Quote
fender73 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 OLP Tony Levin (if you can find one?) - felt narrow to me! Quote
Shawman Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Schecters are usually alright (compared to some other 5's i've played) not sure of the exact spacing of mine but will check Quote
bubinga5 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) what price range are you looking at? im always confused as to why people cant get used to a different string spacing..its only MM's.. practice and mastering isnt that far away.. Stingray 5's or the OLP's are a great spacing though.. Edited September 12, 2011 by bubinga5 Quote
uncle psychosis Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 The string spacing on my Yamaha TRB1005 feels about the same as it does on my Jazz bass. Haven't measured it, but it doesn't feel like a stretch... Quote
dc2009 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Thinnest spacing I've tried on a 5 is on my non-Reverse TB V, delberthot has one up for sale IIRC, if you're near him it may be worth trying it out. Great sound from that P pickup too! Quote
Geek99 Posted September 12, 2011 Author Posted September 12, 2011 Sorry - about £350 max as I have small resource-drains to consider Quote
wizbat Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 try one of the ibanez soundgear SR range of fivestrings , some of the narrowest necks i,ve found, I got three of em and only retired 'em because jon shuker made my sixes. Haven't got a clue where yoju are but if you are in south lincs you're welcome to come round and try one. Quote
Geek99 Posted September 12, 2011 Author Posted September 12, 2011 I'm near mansfield - thanks for the offer and the tip Quote
dc2009 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 looks like delberthot is up in scotchland, and I'm in london, but if you're lucky there'll be one of these basses a bit closer to you to try out. I wholeheartedly recommend it as a fantastic bass, and just within your budget too Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011
OLP Tony Levin (if you can find one?) - felt narrow to me!
Yep they are narrower than an EBMM and they sound/play pretty good too. Pickguards are a bit naff but everything else is good and in budget Quote
geoffbyrne Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Peavey Cirrus BXP. 10mm at the nut & 16mm at the bridge. Hohner Pro B Bass V is the same. G. Quote

Geek99 Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 (edited) yes, narrow spacing five string. I have medium size hands and short arms. thanks to everyone for their thoughts, I bought this Nice Thing - a short scale five string made by ProseBass, who I met once at the Nottingham Bass Bash in 2009. Sadly it is embargoed until Xmas. Edited September 14, 2011 by Geek99 Quote
fender73 Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 thats ages away! How will you cope? Quote
chrismuzz Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 While I was waiting for my first 6 string, I tuned down to B and played higher up the neck. You might want to set it up properly though. My sig reveals that I learnt that one the hard way! Quote
