Hey guys it's been a long time... crazy summer gigs lol! Anyhow i'm back on it... so i've put two new tutorials together (on a new sexy camera yippee!!!).

Both tutorials are covering the II V I progression. They're simply a couple of licks that can be applied over the chord progression - the key is to analyze each lick/melody and understand why they work over the II V I progression.

Once you've leaned them stick them in as many different keys as you want and really try to play around with the phrasing.

Thanks Scott. I will check those out when i get back from work.

I am at the start of the improvisation road. Spent some time on upping my theory (from nowhere to ok) - lots of time on scales, arpeggios, chords. I really want to look at phrasing this new found knowledge into some juicy licks. I ran with your improv video on your site (which is great btw - donation forthcoming). Its about substituting DMinMaj7 over a G7 in a Cmaj ii-v-i. Anyway, sounds great when you do it - utter crap when i do it. I understand the key is rhythm and phrasing - any tips, pointers, links would be appreciated.

BottomE...

Sorry for not replying mate... didn't see anybody had posted.

Anyway... tips for beginning improv...

Start with chord tones first because they the 'meat and potatoes' of any sound/harmony. The scale then fills in the missing gaps. For instance a C major 7 chord is C,E,G,B... if we add 3 more notes (D,F,A) we have a major scale. So any arpeggio is only three notes away from being a full scale. That's why it's good to start working on the arpeggio/chord tones first because they're are the 'foundation' notes of any chord.

The Dmin/major7th arpeggio on a G7... first of all make sure you can improvise comfortably just using the G7... then try move onto the Dmin/major7th. Try and come up with one lick that really works over the G7... use it over and over until the sound of the substitution gets drilled into your subconscious... for instance when I listen to someone improvising i can hear when they use different substitutions because i've got 'the sound' fully absorbed in my ear.

Then when you can 'hear' that one lick you've been playing for a few days start to try and come up with other melodies that work.

Hope that helps man.

easy,

Scott.
