Sandbergs - Tell me about them please - Cali JM4 / PM4

The main physical difference I've noticed from a "traditional" bass is that the fretboard radius seems to be a lot larger, i.e. the fretboard is flatter. I LOVE this, it seems to help make the neck feel faster and easier to play.

In case you're interested, here's the link to when I bought my Cali PM a couple of months ago; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=Sandberg

I agree about the neck, i too love the feel of a flatter fretboard, thats why i love Laklands with their 10" radius but i think the Sandbergs are even flatter.

Im not even going to click on that link as i know whats in it and i dont want to see it lol.

I was interested in a Sandberg but tried the Mayones after being advised that it was probably a better take on a modern version of a traditional Fender

I fear that the OP, after his triumphant return to this forum, may be falling back into bad habits! Regardless of the merits of Sandberg basses, he is unlikely to find one appreciably better than the rather nice bass that he has just acquired. If I may I would suggest that should consider spending a bit more time playing and getting used to that before setting off on a never-ending quest for the mythical ideal bass!!

Yes... I can appreciate your point but what floats your boat might sink the OP's and viceversa, all we are saying to him for the umpteen time, is get down or up (depending on his geographical postition) to Guitar Guitar in Epsom and try those 3 Sandberg, and see what you make of them. It could be make or break but at least after that visit he would have his own opinion of them and not one which he has been spoonfed to him.

After the big day we had yesterday we were out for a meal (us being the GG Epsom staff and a few of the company directors). About half an hour into the meal I started having a chat to the guy sitting opposite me. Turns out he didn't work for GG, but was in fact MD of Sandberg in the UK.

Needless to say, we had a good chat :)

Was that Alan from Synergy? He's always been very helpful when I've spoken to him on the phone!

Sarum guitars in Salisbury is a Sandberg stockist with 5 or 6 of the beauties on display. 10 mins walk from Salisbury train station which is on a direct line from Waterloo. I haven't been in there for a good few months mind.

Their number is 01722 341497 if you want to call em to see what they are holding.

Hello Pete.

This all sort of stems from the fact I have bought and sold without playing for far too long and I have always had to make some compromises with all the instruments I've had and think it's not really too much to ask to own a bass that ticks all my boxes. A lot of this stems from limited funds, experiments because of a mind corrupted by Basschat, and being a bit of a magpie :)

I went to Nevada to buy a guitar, tried plenty and came out with a USA Fender Strat Deluxe. It is the most delightful guitar, suits me perfectly and I adore it. This happened because I tried them first. I plan to do the same with a bass. I will go to GG and try a bunch of basses.
ok spill the beans now for pete sake! :)
The reason for the name changes was because in recent months fender have been bringing lawsuits against a lot of german bass manufacturers for patent infringement and the like. They infact actually got 3 closed down. Therefore, Sandberg changed their model names as a precautionary move for fear of being another victim.

I had a chat with Mark at Bass Direct and I am going to try a Mayones Jabba on his recommendation, it ticks more of my boxes than the Sandys. Got to shift my Status Vintage first though!

Exactly what I happened when I was interested in a Sandberg!

I did get the Mayones and it has been great – a real ‘super jazz’ for a fraction of the cost of many of the alternatives……

See? I am a minority, I tried the Mayonnaise and didn't like it. I preferred and still prefer the Sandberg, which is why I keep saying that one man's meat is another man's poison. You've got to try them before a shop owner try to convince you and sell you this or that bass! You need to make your own opinion and stop listening to people who's interest is bia$ed, capish?
