Doddy Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 You don't get the gigs with artists as diverse as Dizzy Gillespie and Jethro Tull (amongst many others) if you aren't any good. Quote
fender73 Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 Thanks Doddy, like i said, maybe i haven't heard the right stuff. Quote
skychaserhigh Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Carefull what you say about him around these parts...look what happened when I made a comment about Mr Miller .... Quote

What's not to admire. Having said that his music is not quite to my taste even if his ability is. Edited September 14, 2011 by BassBus Quote

I'd lose before the first note but I'd do it! Quote
Pentode Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I quite like the fact that he took the trouble to 'chat' with me via a few emails regarding fretless basses and playing. His playing's not bad either! Quote

I don't hear any terrible playing there-sometimes his intonation is a bit off,but he sounds pretty on it in that video. Quote
Alun Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I have huge respect for his work with a lot of great artists, but I must admit I find his intonation pretty ropey Quote

Anyway, apparently he's not that impressed with my playing so thats that! Each to their own...now...about that Marcus bloke.......just kidding Quote
urb Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 If I'm totally honest I don't like his playing at all - the false harmonics thing is jaw dropping but if I put his phrasing, tone and general musicianship up against my man Gary Willis (or dare I say Jaco) I'm afraid there's no contest - he might be able to sight read and shred until the cows come home, IMHO that does not make you a 'great' player - just my thoughts on the thing but I've tried hard to like this guy's work and I just don't - all due respect to his abilities though, he knows his way around a six string fretless and no mistake Quote
ped Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Sometimes these players are successful because of their attitude, too. Steve is probably a dream to work with and a really nice guy. Probably. Quote

xgsjx Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I haven't really paid much attention to him before, but I wish my terrible playing was as bad as his! Quote
Grand Wazoo Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Steve Bailey = Monster. He is a contemporary living legend, I can only repeat what has been righlty said above, he has worked with the creme de la creme of big name artists and not because he's just a pretty face, far from. As far as his bass playing is concerned, he is one of the most complete musicians, he can do melody, rhythm and fundamental groove all in one. Quote

ern500evo Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Love the little off the cuff groove with TM in that vid! Quote
derrenleepoole Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I blow hot and cold with this guy... when he's grooving, he's fantastic... but as soon as the widdling starts with the harmonics, I switch off. He's very good at it though, the widdling harmonics that is, there's no doubting that, but it's just not my thing. Interesting in that video he discusses being a 4 string player with Dizzy. Now that I would like to hear, but Youtube is coming up blank. Quote
Faithless Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 You can't deny his chops and credits, but I was never fan of his playing. Quote
