essexbasscat
So been wondering... When the topic of SM58's come up, it's only a matter of time before someone mentions the chinese, inferior copies. I've been wondering, how do you recognise a fake from the real thing ? can you tell from appearance alone ? Cheers !
Mickeyboro
I googled and found enough info to get an eBay refund when I was flogged one.

I remembered that the easiest way to tell was by checking to see if the XLR pins were numbered, but doing a quick google this doesn't seem to be fool proof anymore. It seems the countefeiters are upping their game.
Doctor J
I got a trio of fake 57s a few years back. It was easy to tell they were fake because they fell apart when I unscrewed the caps, literally came to pieces in my hand.

acidbass
I bought a GREAT fake once, it was pretty much identical in every way except for the sound when I compared it to a real 58 - so much more bottom end and clarity with the real one. Very difficult to spot, I would echo the comments about buying from a registered dealer as mine was bought used from a local guy on a music forum and it all ended badly!
