hmm... Raised section on my new LTD bass - Anything to be concerned about?

As long as it's structurally sound I don't care about it to be honest. Between the bridge and the pickup there's a raised section where I assume the body pieces join. The finish isn't broken, it's just a perfectly straight, very slightly raised section parallel to the strings. I've circled the area where it is but you can't see it on the pic. Kinda lame on the QC but as long as it doesn't move I don't mind

Not a bridge ground wire from the pick up cavity is it?

I've had similar-looking flaws in guitars before and never had issues with their structural integrity.

As an aside, I unboxed 3 brand new LTD Surveyor 415s when I bought mine, and I had to choose between a split in the neck pocket of one, an odd twist in the neck of another, and a small defect in the finish on the back of the third. Needless to say that the third is the one I took home, but it goes to show that lame QC isn't necessarily uncommon. I'd even have cared if it weren't for the ridiculously low price I paid.

It could be that water/sweat has gotten in at an exposed area in the pup rout and run along an open piece of grain (capillary action) thus expanding it.[/quote]

This is a brand new bass out the box, no sweat or water has been near it! There's not really much to see, it's just a short section where there's a small lip or ridge in the finish in a perfectly straight line.

It has EMG electronics, no ground wire!

Total price on this one was $269 (£170) brand new on closeout from a big box US internet retailer. As long as there's no risk of it moving I can put up with it. Thanks for the replies guys

It sometimes happens when manufactures don't use completely dried out timber, wood with a very open grain (ash for example) or they don't seal it properly. After several years it can sometime happen even when everything has been done properly, working with wood sometimes throws up these problems.

It's certainly not structural and has been said before happens on more a few expensive brands with poor quality control.

It's a cool looking bass and probably no one is going to notice the blemish unless you point it out.

Thanks Rich. It DOES have an ash body, and you're right - no one but me would ever notice it unless I said. I had it for a couple of days before I even noticed!
