"Active" pick ups

Bit of a numpty question really - I'm thinking of upgrading some pick ups - seen some nice stuff here and on eBay but if I'm going to use a preamp are only some pick ups suitable or can any p/up be used with a Preamp..

AFAIK, all you need to do is get different pots for the volume/blend controls to use active pickups with a pre-amp.

Any passive pickups will do the trick as long as they're decent sounding to begin with. The preamp will generally come with the pots but if it doesn;t then it will specify what value you'll need.

Most active basses come with passive pickups and a preamp. Pickups like EMGs are active
