Guest MoJo Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Bought this bass from fellow Basschatter Chris (Me An My Bass). 13092011568 by markmojo, on Flickr He had been led to believe by a previous owner that this orange peel satin black finish was the remnents of the original factory finish. To his credit, when Chris was informed that the bass originally left the factory in a beautiful trans blue burst finish, he couldn't be more apologetic. A deal was struck and now the work of refinishing the bass begins. I'm hoping that, being that this was a trans finish bass, a nicely grained piece of wood lies beneath that awful paint job. If so, I may go for a natural finish....if not, who knows how it'll look when it's finished Quote
cd_david Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 It would look stunning in a yellowed/off white Quote
MB1 Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 MB1. Or a Taxi yellow,(dont think ive ever seen a yellow ray!) Quote

Guest MoJo Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 Nitromors is doing an excellent job of fetching the black finish off and the woodgrain underneath looks good. Only problem is that whichever donkey applied this awful black finish failed to seal the grain first so the black has impregnated the grain. Might try Nitromors on wirewool and clean with White spirits, see if that'll draw it out Quote
EdwardHimself Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 This re-finish is not going to be before time. Quote
Cheeseman Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Definately need taxi yellow, possibly with black graphics, i think would look the business!!!!! Quote
Guest MoJo Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Getting there ...... 29092011614 by markmojo, on Flickr Quote
Guest MoJo Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Anyone any idea what wood it is? Quote
Darkstrike Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Looks a bit like ash, and IIRC that's generally what trans EBMM's were, so it's very likely. Quote
EdwardHimself Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 looks like not a bad bit of grain on there. Quote
Guest MoJo Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I've got most of the paint off now. Still not sure which way to jump as regards the finish. It would be a shame to hide the grain Quote
None of you lot are fans of McFly then? Glad to see this working out after the bumpy start, looks like it could be a super cool bass. I like the idea of a theme you know, once a refin always a refin but if its different on purpose then that could appeal to someone else or even lots of people. What about a collage of loads of famous Ray players on the back, Louis Johnson, Bernard edwards, Flea etc etc under the laquer but just a normal finish from the front? Grassie Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Always liked the look of a the trans teal with a white pearloid plate. Having said that, I think you should restore it to it's original scheme. Your bass will appreciate that, and reward you with tone and sexyness. Quote
rubis Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 trans white would look good with that grain showing through and the "aged" pickguard Quote
Guest MoJo Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I tried painting the body but wasn't happy with the results. The paint is almost all back off now. I've decided to either go for a stain/clear lacquer or an oiled finish. I'd like a warm, mid-to-dark colour to go well with a b-w-b pick guard and contrast with the maple neck. Quote
